    Default Greetings from the Netherlands

Hello everybody and greetings from the Netherlands,

I'm a 24 year old student and been shaving with a straight razor for a couple of months now. As I am the only one I know that does this in my circle of friends and family, I figured it was high time to start looking for some fellow straight razor shavers to talk about these wonderful blades and, perhaps, learn a few new things in the process!

I own a DOVO 'Best Quality' plastic handled straight razor (which, for those fellow lovers of old things, I keep in my Grandfathers old shaving box from the 1930s). I've gotten good enough at the shaving at this point that I don't cut myself any more, though I still have some trouble shaving the jaw and chin (not yet getting that 'baby-smooth' vibe, alas).

So, yeah, looking forward browsing these forums and all that.

    Cheerio,

    Vin

Welkom Vin, rond dezelfde leeftijd ben ik ook begonnen met SR shaving. Toen nog geen internet en niemand om te vragen.

Hello, there is alot of info here. Watching videos helped me. The less pressure you use, the better the shave. And sometimes you just got to let the shave be. Give it some time and all of a sudden you will be there.

Thank you all for the welcome,

Kees, I am glad that there are forums like these for questions nowadays. And youtube! Without youtube and a rather nice shaving guide I found online I would probably have severed my nose already (I do favour the "fool's pass").

Bill3152, thank you for the tip! I plan on letting my beard do its thing in the coming summerbreak when I'm off for some fieldwork for a month. It'll be interesting to see what straight shaving has done for my beard growth; so far, I am noticing a slightly thicker growth, but I might be imagining it, of course.

I am really enjoying the act of shaving, though. It's really a moment of contemplation.

    Regards,

    Vin

I do the fools pass every day! What I do is i hold the razor and nod my head up and down slowly so the razor doesnt slip. I have never cut myself that way. Just go easy. When I first started that I held the razor with both hands. And watch you dont have too much lather where you cant clearly see where the nose starts!

The funny thing is, I only recently found out only 'fools' do ATG on the upper lip; I've never cut myself doing the fool's pass, though.
