    Welcome!

Pretty impressive you did all 3 passes right off! Especially with a shavette!

As for starting to hone, all you "need" is a Norton 4000x8000 combo stone. Save your money for more razors... RAD!

Nice intro, and I agree, it is very well written. I like the strop and hones you bought, esp the hone. Welcome!

Sounds like you are off to a decent start. But here is a bump on the learning curves.

Check out the Show and Tell section of the forum for Honey and Translucent horn. Vintage horn sometimes has an integral wedge. Which is less common in celluloid, but not unheard of.

I recently pulled a damaged set of vintage (1850's) honey horn off of an Erye that had both a integral wedge and were very translucent. A lot of the modern honey horn is finished much thicker than vintage, and therefor less translucent.

Here is a modern custom with translucent honey horn by jeness

The simple test for cell rot is to place the dry razor in a zip lock bag. Usually within three days the damage will start to show again.

Thanks for the heads up on this... I'll definitely try the zip-loc bag test.

Thanks! I can't tell you how much I actually ENJOY shaving now... it's therapeutic, mentally, and overall I like being well groomed to boot! Now, if I can only work in a Guinness and a pipe while doing it I'd be set. Personally, though, I'd rather just see a nice head in my pint than a bit of lather...

Yeah, I will say doing the XTG pass on my neck was, well, tricky to say the least. But, the true test was when my wife looked at me and then did a double take and reached out to feel. I'd say I passed.

As for the hones, I definitely want the Norton 4k/8k combo, I just kinda need to let the funds replenish themselves a bit...

Thanks! I'm looking forward to both of these items, especially the strop. The only thing I think I need to do to it (besides maybe neatsfoot oil or strop dressing) is replace the ring for the swivel. Apparently, from what I've read anyway (so don't take this as truth), Belfast linen was considered the best quality back in the days of yon. Plus, I will always think of the Ballad of William Bloat whilst stropping.

Yeah, everything I had read said that the Geneva's and then later the Genco's were great blades made from great steel. If I get a full 7 day set, I guess I could start calling them the Geneva Convention...

    Thanks for the warm welcome!
