Thanked: 0Newbie from Jacksonville Florida area
Hello Everyone,
I am active duty in the U.S. Navy and am stationed at NAS Jacksonville here in Florida. I enjoy being a family man and coaching my boys in football and baseball. I love being involved in our local church and I also like cruiser motorcycles. I just got my first straight last week, it is a vintage Genco which needs to be honed, if it can be honed. I also bought a shave ready Gold dollar 66 off ebay and managed to get through my first shave without any cuts or nicks. I think it needs a good stropping. I have 2 1/2" X 23" horse hide on order and it should be here in a couple of days. I have a vintage paddle style strop, but it is kind of short and worn it came with the Genco. I am debating on getting a good razor here in the classifieds or one from wippeddog.com, I just don't have much spending money right now.
Nice to meet everyone and I look forward to getting to know you. I wish I would have found this site before buying a razor, luckily the Gold dollar only cost me $12.

Larry at whippeddog is a great guy. You can email him and he will set you up with a razor that wil give you a great shave. Welcome aboard, and let us know how it pans out for you.
Mastering implies there is nothing more for you to learn of something... I prefer proficient enough to not totally screw it up.

Welcome Pappi,
As a fellow ex-swabbie and a transplant to Florida myself, I welcome you to SRP. Maybe I can help you get that old Genco up and running ("if it can be honed"). You will probably need that Gold Dollar tuned up also. If you are interested drop me a PM so we can exchange addresses. Again, welcome aboard.
Regards - Walt

Thanked: 580I would take up Walt's offer, Genco are fine razors, and gold dollars can be too with a bit of fine tuning. Like my cruisers too, although they are all "sleepers", fast when they need to be, keeps the young guns on their tows.

Thanked: 22Ditto Meghan, thanks for your service. Most Gencos are very capable razors. Easy to get into the RAD thing, but lots of information here to help with future decisions on razors. Some of the more popular vintage razors are that way because they very reliably hone easily, are easier to maintain, and shave well for a larger varity of shavers. One or two good ones will get you through a lifetime. Get over to your area on ocassion. Have a son in Ocala. Best of luck, thanks again, and Welcome to SRP
