Thanked: 1Hello from Oakland CA.
Hey! I've been lurking around here for a while figured it was about time I sighed myself up. I'm a sysadmin to pay the bills but spend my 20s doing hardwood floors. Now I do a little woodworking and knife making for fun. Just enjoy building things with my hands in general. I've shaved with a DE forever but went to the straight razor a little over a year ago. I finally had enough room to build myself a little bit of a woodshop and with it came some Japanese whetstones for the chisels and once I figured out how to get things sharp it was really hard to stop with the sharp things... The rest they say is history... I've got a Dovo my parents gave me when I graduated highschool finally honed up some almost 20 year late and an antique store special I've be been shaving with regularly that I've yet to identify.
Like I said I've been reading SRP for a while -- finally time to tip my cards. I've already learned so much from this place. Thanks much.

Thanked: 21Welcome Jason, I'm actually moving down to Alameda next month for work(Coast Guard). There is never a shortage of information of all sorts here as I'm sure you have already realized. Many an artist here with mediums of steel, wood, or other materials. And no question to big or small for people to assist with if the knowledge is available. I look forward to seeing what your hands and mind can accomplish.
Respectfully,
Christian

Thanked: 1Thanks Christian! I love the East Bay. Dunno how much ya know of the place but if ya want some suggestions for places to hit up let me know!
I do have one and a half kamisori inspired blades that are almost ready for heat treat but no clue if they'll end up as anything useful when I'm done. Honestly I've never shaved with one only oogled them at japan woodworker which has sadly closed its doors. Outside of this I'm on my 7th knife and only the last few am I really proud of. There are also three knots waiting for me to turn some handles in the drawer too but first I have to finish like 5 other things. If idle hands do the devils work than that guy is not gonna get much from me.
Someday I should stop being lazy and take some pictures.

Thanked: 22Hi Jason, welcome to SRP. Now if you are stuck on sharp, you should be one of the next grand honemiesters to come along. But it is really hard to understand straight razor sharp, unless you use it. It needs to be turely sharp, yet still have a feeling of softness on the face. Is actually a step beyond just sharp. Good luck, again, welcome to SRP, lots here to learn from, and sounds like you may have some experience to share as well,
