A hello from Western Canada

Afternoon,

My name's Scott and I'm a new SR shaver (sounds like a group meeting - is this SR stuff addictive?). This site has been instrumental in giving me the info I needed to make sure that SR shaving would be right for me; I can honestly say that in these two weeks since I started, my skin has never looked or felt better. It was that multi-bladed, overpriced monster that was causing me grief all this time, and I'm sorry. All that wasted money, all those painful shaves, all those comments like "Geez, Scott, what's wrong with your neck?!?!" But now I'm free.

I've read almost every article on this site, watched about 50 videos and can honestly say I am impressed. Thanks to you guys, I was confident that my initial purchases would be the correct ones for me, and they were. I love shaving now, and that's a big deal to me.

Welcome to SRP! What did you get if you don't mind me asking?

I picked up a Dovo Natural (Bamboo scales) 5/8 carbon on a 20% discount (a bit of sweet talk with the gal at the store), a beginner's Best badger brush and G.F. Trumper's Rose cream. We have a local leather shop and they had everything I needed to make my own strop; 3" x 26" bridle leather from the cut-off bin, a D-ring, rivets and hook, all for $16! He even helped me assemble it, whatta guy.

Very nice!!!! I'd say you're ahead of the game then!!! That's one thing I want to do yet is put together my own strop. Again, welcome!!!

Is this SR stuff addictive? Not at all, I have a closet full of shaving gear (soaps, creams, brushes, razors) because i NEED it and would not be able to shave without all of it, not because i want it. Welcome to SRP sounds like you are off to a good start

It truly is liberating! Not having to rely on buying disposable blades, the pleasure of using a well crafted sharp instrument, turning a chore into a pleasure, and most importantly, your skin thanks you.

Go for it! It really isn't difficult to put together a perfectly workable strop, and like so many other things it is very satisfying to use a tool I made myself. I see there's a Tandy store in Mississauga so it's not too far from you and they should have everything you'd need

Now, as for the fit and finish in comparison with the pros... that's another story. Let's just say their skills are on a whole other level than mine when it comes to leather working. :)

As for its addictiveness, that's naturally as very individual thing, but in my humble opinion: YES! :) Beware the various acquisition disorders as they can easily get out of hand. But it's fun nonetheless.

Welcome, I hope you find all the folks here as helpful as I did! As far as the addiction goes, it can very easily get to that point. I am currently nursing cases of RAD and SAD, so far my HAD hasn't kicked in but that may be because im a very poor honer as of yet. Oh and thats all since about December. Welcome again and enjoy the ride!

Ok, so... My first question. I use my left hand for the left side of my face (and right for right), and for the life of me, my hand blocks my view for the first strokes (sideburn down the cheek). Is there a simple trick to see what the heck I'm doing?
