Hello from Chicago
My name is Mina and I am a licensed barber (Nov 2012) and I hope to find some old school info and techniques as many of the barber shops I have been to not only do the barbers not want to shave but don't seem interested in preserving, for lack of a better term, the old ways. thank you for having this forum.

Welcome to SRP. Peruse the forum and ask any questions you have.

Hello, Mina, and welcome to Straight Razor Place. Yours is a noble profession. You're right, though, most modern barbers show no interest in the world of the straight razor. That's too bad. Here, though, you'll find many friends who find the straight razor a sweet obsession. We're delighted to have you with us.

Mina,
Allow me to add my hello as well.
Welcome aboard. As ReardenSteel and Obie have already said, feel free to ask questions about the ritual of straight razor shaving.
-
Thank you all so much, so much reading to do here, I love it!!!
-
Cool where in Chicago are you working?
-
Right now Vernon Hills, just hair cutting - but still looking for a decent shop. Suburbs, city is not to my liking....

Hello there! Tell us a bit more about yourself. Did you learn how to shave others in barber school, or only hair cutting? If there is anything you want to know or learn, you will find it here.
Depending on what you're looking to do, I'm sure there areprobably a couple members near yyou. I would suggest reaching out and meeting up if you are new to the straight razor.
I wish there were more barbers with the interest in going "old fashioned". I think that mind set is kind of interesting. Straight shaving is thought of as old fashioned, but I think it has been modernized in a lot of ways other than technique, especially in regards to the accessories.
I have found one place near me that has barbers that use a straight, but haven't had the chance to get out there yet to give them business. Best of luck and enjoy the wealth of knowledge here.

There are 3 old barbers in joliet (banana joes) that still do straight razor shaves. Helped me out when I started with a straight. Kinda a drive for you tho.

Welcome in Mina, :chapeau
It is always great to have a new voice on the forum.
I hope you find work that allows you to explore and expand upon your interest.
A group of like minded people here, share your experiences, ask your questions, and relish in the journey. :)

thank you for the warm welcomes! I studied at cosmo school but decided to go to barber school in Chicago, and found that in the city they are not so welcoming to female barbers at some places, or others didn't want a newbie, etc....want to know and learn more about the 'old ways' as I feel they are too important to let fade away. Also, when you can educate the public, they are more than happy to listen, learn, and explore. I am only a year out of school so I look forward to what I find here, I am already blurry eyed, strained backed, and blissfully tired, as I have been on and off reading the forums all day. Again thank you for the warm welcomes....:beer1:

Keep your eye on the meetup section of the forum, I feel like the Chicago area is due for another one fairly soon. You'll get to meet a lot of knowledgeable people, both enthusiasts and professionals alike.

Thank you!! I will do that!

Welcome aboard! You have found the right place to learn all there is to know about straight razors and wet shaving in general. Just to let you know that straight shaving doesn't have to be as scary as it sounds, you may want to check out this thread:

My best wishes and thanks to you in trying to preserve a rapidly fading art.
