I'm glad I finally made the cut (pun intended). My children hate my humor even though it still makes them laugh. I have not begun to straight shave, I'm currently in the R&D phase. Generally I hate shaving, however this appeals to me because of the art. I'm exited to soak up all the information I can and get to know some of you guys!
Welcome carver. One nearly universal comment we hear from those who take up the sport, hobby, or art as you called it, is that what was once an annoying chore becomes something that they actually look forward to doing. That feeling seldom eases with time. I've been at it for many (many) years and yet, after shaving with one of two new soaps that just arrived, a few minutes ago I found myself contemplating shaving again this afternoon just to try out the other one. Again, welcome aboard and welcome to the forum.

Welcome from Fort Worth, TX. I too hated shaving and maybe shaved 3 times a week. Now I find it hard to skip a day! I now have two straights and I bought a Muhle DE razor for when I'm in a rush and don't have time for the straight. I also use the DE for touchups that I still have not mastered with the straight. I love using both! It's even more satisfying once I learned to hone my razors and get good shaves.

DE razors solved my problem but I had always been fascinated with straight razors when I saw them used in movies. I also saw a friend many years ago get a barber shave with a straight and I was mesmerized with the process.

Watch videos on YouTube of people doing it and the more times you watch, the more you pick up. You'll notice little things about the blade angle, the lather, the whole process.

They do sound allot alike! Now that I have turned a half of a century old I find myself expecting more it of life instead of the old well that's good enough. I just wish I would have realized that earlier. The whole direct of straight shaving can go back to pipe smoking there are many different aspects to it....the pipe the tobacco the way you pack the tobacco it is very intricate. You can do it a thousand ways and never be wrong or right! Sounds like my kinda place!Quote:
