Hi Group,
I have noticed quite a few members post pictures of their razor beside a small anvil.
Initially, I thought it was kind of cute but not necessary; but after years of seeing them, I'm starting to think that I need one too.
Well, do I?
Since I don't do any restoration work on razors, or anything else of that size, I guess the only thing it would do is look nice. Is that about right?

Frank, They certainly have all the needed appeal for our masculine vanities. But what do you want to *DO* with it - other than accessorize a photo? Pinning? Most pieces of hard metal will do. Polish the surfaces of hammer (I use a stainless tablespoon) and 'anvil' and tap away.
I assume you're not looking to hammer forge a blade.
If you just want one 'cause they're 'cool'. Go for it and enjoy.
Also great for keeping in your pocket, so you can tell people, "I carry an anvil back and forth at work" Nothing sounds more manly!
IMHO every SR user should have the Knowledge and the Equipment to tighten the pins on their own razors..

Honestly I use a Jeweler's Block rather then a small anvil but either combined with a 3-4oz Ballpeen hammer will do everything you need
Search these two terms "Jeweler's Block" and try "Chasing Hammer"
A note on the pics that many don't realize..
They also show people the quality of the build :)
The fact that the razor balance on the scales with the blade open tells people that the build is straight and that the pins are tight and straight..

I would say that you definately need an anvil, so that when you move flat you have more.stuff to pack up. :) seriously I have been thinking about getting one, but not sure exactly why I want it either.Quote:

Thanks for the inspiration pixelfixed, I just found a chunk of scrap steel at work, app 4"x2"x1", took it to the wire wheel and belt sander now it's all shiney too.

A small one, preowned, or from Harbor Freight, does come in handy. Looking for a hard flat area to tighten the scales on a razor. Pound a nail into a piece of wood without it going into the table top, flatten a bent key, etc.
you need one.

The second hole is for making a pin if you chose to do it this way, myself I use a Vise but, a 5/64" bit and drill 3/4" deep, this can be used to peen one side of the pin this should work for most any razor... Unless you make big thick clunky scales then go 1" deep :p

Sorry that also leads to the question of how long a piece of pin stock to cut, if my hole is 3/4", presumably the stock should be cut 3/4" + washer thickness + 1/?" To allow the first side to be peened, how long should ? be, I think I read about 1/16" but I am not sure :)
The pin size is 1/16" Nominal, which means it ain't perfect :) it varies a tiny bit between lots, this also is why I drill pin holes at 5/64" to allow for the varience and any Percussion Bulge that might occur or you can split scales..
Vintage pins can be smaller then 1/16" or slightly larger so they vary also..
As to which Metric bits work my answer is :shrug: don't know, I have this worked out for Inch dimensions converting is not something I deal with :p
You want to leave about 1-2mm above the anvil to form a peen then you pull that pin out and put the washer(s) on from the other side.. This is also something you have to adjust to YOU, to much and you bend the pin, to little and you get a weak peen, it adjusts with the force behind your taps with the hammer... You put the pin stock in the hole then you adjust by cutting with the Dykes and filing it flat, you don't cut the pin first ie: you adjust by feel...
Of course this is all in the workshop sticky thread under pinning, the only difference is I am using a Vice instead of a mini anvil...

i've been looking on the bay and found a range of designs, some iron some brass, some new some old...
Go to a Michael's craft store, they have them there in the jewelry making section.
I got my little black one at Tandy Leather.20 bucks or so.
Here is a site called Micro mark that has them and a lot of other cool stuff. Anvils

Check Hobby lobby or other places that have the art and craft stuff. I got mine for 9 bucks with a coupon the wife had. Also got two 36 inch 1/16 German silver rods for pins. She got those for 7 or 8 dollars w coupon. They also had fancy washers in the jewelery dept.
I just polished up my hammer and I do all my pinning on that.. I guess if ur gonna b using it for a variety of things probably something good to have around..
