Georgetown Pottery G20 scuttle for Christmas

I got a Georgetown Pottery G20 scuttle. I knew I was getting it and I'd seen the pictures but pictures didn't prepare me for how big this thing is. I've been using a scuttle from SRD and it is a little smaller and it holds about the same amount of water. I have limited space on the sink I use so size could become an issue. After two shaves I love the G20 but I still love the SRD scuttle as well. The only thing the G20 has the SRD scuttle doesn't is a stopper for the reservior section. This is nice for my routine because I heat the scuttle with water in the reservior and lather section both. I use the microwave. Then I soak my brush in the lather bowl. When I apply soap to the brush I then pour out the water from the lather bowl. The stopper keeps the water in the reservoir. On the SRD scuttle I've been sticking a washcloth in the hole to keep that water from pouring out.

With the exception of the stopper I don't think the G20 does any better than the SRD scuttle. They both hold the same amount of water give or take in the reservior. The bumps and ridges in the G20 aren't as drastic as I was expecting and I don't see them being of much help to form a lather. Might be different results with different soaps or creams. Jury still out on how much benefit the ridges are IMO.

There is one thing I think I'd like on a scuttle or bowl. I'd like a significant lip around the top of the lather bowl for scraping lather off the sides of the brush right at the handle. Also it would keep the lather in the bowl better I think. This is a minor issue though. My lather doesn't try to escape. :)

The G20 is an excellent scuttle for keeping a brush warm and bowl lathering. SRD is amazing at keeping the brush warm. I wish I had not parted with my SRD scuttle but I like the G20 for reasons SRD lacked Mainly ridges

i got the g20 for christmas, as well. i quite enjoy it. very easy to use and keeps, both, brush and lather nice and warm.
aside from that, it also looks fantastic.

Read this and ordered a G15. Sounds like a much better way, than what I have right now with a shaving cup sitting in the sink, and having to move it to rinse the blade.

Been scuttle shopping for a while. I am still undecided on which to buy. I like the plug feature on the Georgetown scuttles. On the other hand the dirty birds get great reviews too. Guess I should just pull the trigger on one an give it a go.

The GP scuttle is very nice. On ridges in a scuttle or bowl, a trick I learned from Razorfeld is to use epoxy which mixes in the tip to create your own swirls, lines, and w's in any scuttle or bowl. If you think it needs more, do more!

Let me point out that while this epoxy method works well on ceramic and very well on glass, for some reason it can come loose when applied to a plastic surface. I started with small salsa bowl from a dollar store or Walmart and later expanded to ceramic and glass. I now use a glass bowl with custom buttons, line and swirls applied. I sent a number of the salsa bowls to various people and would like to hear if their bowl failed and the epoxy came off.

Tried it this morning. It was great! Lather was warm, and freed up the sink so that I can run water over the blade, during shaving, rather than taking the shaving bowl out of the sink, running water over the blade, putting the bowl back, draining some water as it gets to high, etc. Just having the scuttle on the vanity top gives a bunch of room.

I've never tried the others, but I have a Dirty Bird and it works quite well at building lather and keeping it warm. I, of course, have switched to cold water and usually face lathering, so I only use it on THE Coldest of days, one of which was yesterday. It also works to keep lather cold if that's your thing!

The G20 is the first and only scuttle I have used. I like it, but don't think anyone should buy is based solely on the stopper.

Pick whatever scuttle you like and then you can buy or make a tapered cork to plug the fill hole.

I'd agree. I used a torn piece of cloth to plug the hole on the SRD scuttleto keep the water in. I put water in the lather bowl to initially soak my brush in then pour it out when I create lather. So I need a stopper. Home made or not, doesn't matter. As for the ridges, I don't know how much better they are from no ridges. I didn't notice any difference when I use the G20 or the SRD scuttle. Both are great.

Got one on order tonight after reading all the reviews on the G20. The ole mugs tackled it we'll enough since being "fired" from holding coffee but this new unit looks like it will pick up the work from here.

I don't have one yet but I've been wanting to get a g20 for quite some time now.

LOL, I was doing the same thing. Then I would be so focused on the shave that I would forget and leave the bowl on the side of the sink, then that lather cools. My G20 is a welcomed addition.

The stopper on the G20 is rubber and pewter. Should I worry about putting the pewter in the microwave? You aren't supposed to put metal in a microwave I've always heard. . I have been taking the stopper out to microwave the scuttle and it's no big deal. Just curious. Don't want my MW to explode. :)

Leave the stopper off for MW. The pressure might shoot it into the magnetometer even if you could live with the sparks.

I got mine(G20) in the mail today but hadn't considered putting it in the MW. How long have you been leaving it in there? I will pass only leaving the stopper in it!

I like it at 1 min, 40 seconds. Microwaves differ a little though. At 2 minutes the lather seems to dissipate or disappear. I put water in the reservoir and the lather bowl both. Then I use the water in the lather bowl to soak the brush. I dump that water out after I lather the brush. This makes for a warm shave that isn't too hot. In a minute 40 the water isn't much hotter than the tap water. But it seems to get the scuttle warm as well so it keeps the lather warmer longer. Hope this helps.

I have one of the original georgetown's. You might want to check with them on microwaving because I remember they recommended against it. That was a few years ago. I think as long as you have reasonably hot tap water that's the best way to warm it.

I called or emailed Georgetown a month or so before getting my G20 at Christmas and they said it was ok to use a MW. I ordered it in November. I have assumed that putting the scuttle with water in the MW would warm up the scuttle along with the water compared to the hot tap water. I wondered how long it would take for the water to heat the pottery so the lather stays warm. I "assumed" the MW would be better but I never tried just using hot tap water. Think I'll try that today. If that is fast it would beat walking from the bathroom to the MW. Especially right after a shower. :)

I fill mine with hot tap water. Dump that after a minute then fill it for a few more to let my brush soak. You lose some of the waters heat the first time you fill it. The when I am ready I will dump it again and refill for the third and final time and us that as I shave. Seems like a lot but takes only a few seconds to dump and refill and my lather is HOT

I fill and dump also, JTmke. Someone showed me to do that with thermoses when I was young.

I do it with thermos and insulated mugs as well.

I let the tap water get hot then filled my G-20 (reservoir and bowl both). After a couple of minuters I dumped it out and filled it again. I let the brush soak like I normally do while I apply pre-shave. Then I soaped brush, dumped water from lather bowl, created lather and commenced shaving. Gotta say there was no difference at all in the shave than when I put the scuttle in the MW for 1 min, 40 seconds. So the shave is the same. The determining factor will be time management and I doubt if that will amount to anything. I hate having nothing to do while something warms up or whatever.

Does anyone else try to manage the time when shaving? I hate just waiting for something to happen while I do nothing.

Anyway, the only reason I'd need to use the MW is if I wanted the lather HOT. I don't. Another thing I think deserves mentioning is the fact that the hot water heater in our house is not turned up that high. The temp is just hot enough that it's pretty uncomfortable to put your hand under it but it won't burn you at all. If the hot water in your house is hotter than mine that may make a difference. It may heat your scuttle up faster.

On a warm lather vs cold (room temp) lather note I think I'm a warm lather guy for the most part. Maybe the cold water shavers can put the scuttle in the freezer. :) Frosted scuttle instead of the frosted beer mug. :) I like a cold shave once in a while but I tried water chilled in the frig for a couple of hours. TOO COLD! :)
