You're getting good at that.
Bob
Practice, practice, practice and a new skiving knife. I have four more in the making. Hopefully they all go very well.
Very nice work, Shaun!
Loverly, Shaun! That thick material is very nice, and more forgiving than the thin stuff, I have come to find.
Making boxes from scratch! Pretty cool! :tu
Great work Shaun! I try to collect in two's so this has peaked my interest. I'm horrible at making boxes. Give me something to turn instead....
Thanks Chris. It is funny how even in the small area of woodwork we find our little areas that we can do quickly and easily and sort of hang out there. I have a thing for making boxes, especially small ones. I wanted to go with the leather covered because it seems so traditional for straight razors. I have quite a few pairs and fours that need boxes. I also have a lot of stuff that i get sick of just sitting around in plastic storage boxes. Today I was thinking i need to figure out a way of marking what is in the boxes. Hopefully I can execute something a little more classy than a label maker.
Elegant! You could continue the journey into marquetry and make an image of the contents! ;)Attachment 194665Although, I'm sure this guy cheated and did not put a guitar in his box.......Seriously, your boxes are very cool and befitting some venerable blades. I had a friend years ago who began his woodworking making replicas of Shaker boxes.....and in some hoity toity gift shops I have seen some nice boxes so there seems to be a market for them as well as a practical use.
Wow Shaun. That's amazing. Is that wrapped in leather too?
VERY NICE! :tu :tu
Yes the outside is all leather. I want to try something exotic like alligator skin. They farm them in the southern US and it is available, I just have not got to the where to get it from yet. This series I am working on will be regular leather. I do intend to do some larger boxes as well. All in good time.
That process of marquetry is most intriguing for sure. It is possible. I bought some small pieces of bone slabs with the thought of using those, I also have a friend that does art with metal etching, so maybe a n etched copper plate. I will figure it out later. Thanks for the idea. No saying they all have to be marked the same.
Leather stamp maybe? Seen good stuff from hexnhit on Instagram
Alligator skin would be Bad A$$! Lovely work!
Great work Rez.
Marquetry work is truley fascinating (I was never very good at it) is very time consuming.
I made this Quilt chest for my wife many yrs ago (we still have it) The chest took a few days to make.
