Has anyone tried one yet? How do you like it? How does it compare to others you have tried?
Gentlemen:
Only this afternoon I saw those SRD scuttles and planned to post a question about them. Does anyone have information on them? I don't use a scuttle, but I am curious.
Regards,
Obie
I got to try one out and do a heat test against 3 other scuttles when I visited Lynn. The SRD one outperformed them all. Just remember, it's designed to keep things warm, not to actually whip up the lather. I'm planning on getting one to replace my mark 1 or 2 GTP scuttle.
Recently purchased the GTP #5 scuttle and have been well pleased with it. It's also quite pleasing to the eye. $45.00 and free shipping next couple of days based on the email I received today or yesterday.
This post comes at a good time. I need to replace my existing skuttles because they are just breaking up from abuse/use. The SRD skuttle looks great! Just ordered a blue one and some CF Lime cream. Can't wait but I know it will not take long, these guys are great!
Take Care,
Richard
In order for a scuttle to stay warm, it needs as much water as possible with the smallest surface area possible. A large, bowl-like shape can be designed to hold a lot of water, but it also has a lot of surface area to dissipate that heat. Keeping the surfaces of the bowl small reduces the surface area for heat to be lost, so the scuttle stays warmer longer. The SRD scuttle is small because it is designed to keep things warm, rather than large to create lather.
I like using the GT scuttle to make lather and keep it warm and for me its a question of getting the water hot enough in the first place next time I will micro wave it (no kettle) for 90 seconds then place it in sink with hot water with the brush in it while I shower and apply a bit of pre shave oil- Dry off, open the CF lime, pour out the water and begin. Currently hot tap water works but could be better.
Is it just me that looks forward to a shave nowadays?
I really enjoy Wednesdays as wife leaves early and it quiet and I can
go through the routine without interruption of any kind.
I see my GTP scuttle much like a thermos. I put hot tap water in the reservoir and fill the bowl area up too. Drop my brush in and cover it with a towel while I shower. The hot water starts to bring the scuttle up to temperature. When I get out of the shower,I drain and refill with hot water again the same as before then go on to getting things ready to shave, strop, etc. Come back drain water out of the bowl only and make up my lather. Works slick for me and scuttle is nice and warm.
Shaving is now fun again !! :)
Just tried microwave for 90 seconds, then when done with shower hit it another 30. Worked just ok. When I was done the water I drained out was only warm to the touch. Next time I will nuke it for 3 minutes.
If you see or hear of a mushroom cloud over Texas I went tooo far.:)
This is where the SRD scuttle shines. It has the best heat retention out of the 5 scuttles I have tried. No need to play around with microwaves or refills.
I can't wait! I have the Moss and the Dirtybird and of the two the Moss is better at keeping lather warm. I am glad to hear that the SRD scuttle is better. I really don't need "hot" but something akin to "warm" is good for me. I just hate cold later.
Thanks,
Richard
How about size wise, is it big enough to lather in or do you need to make the lather and then transfer into it?
I also liked the Moss style the best for keeping the suds warm. Chris has brought some great innovations to our sport for sure. I like the looks of the other scuttles but on some, the space between the walls doesn't hold as much water as the Moss and with a bigger bowl the heat dissipates quicker. If you want to mix in a bowl, the bigger bowls are fine, but you comprimise on keeping the heat. On the SRD, we tried to make sure that we used a little thicker clay and had more room under and on the sides of the bowl for hot water to maximize keeping the top bowl warm. It was all about keeping the suds warm. Mission accomplished. There is room for the brush but really not for lathering. Actually, if you put just a little water in the bottom of the top bowl of any scuttle, it acts as a conductor and will help keep the suds warmer longer. You do need to drag the brush on the side of the bowl when you re-lather to make sure you don't have too much water on the brush when doing this. I usually lather on the face, so not an issue for me. Don liked having a matching color lather bowl, which I thought was a cool idea for those who like making suds in a bowl. I just like warm lather for the entire shave.........:D
Have fun,
Lynn
For those of us like to bowl lather or make super/uber lathers for nice warm lather I take it we warm both the scuttle and the bowl (to prevent loseing the heat while whipping it), make the lather in the bowl and then transfer into the scuttle to maintain warmth of the lather. or is there an easier way do do it?
I did a direct comparison to a GTP Mk 5, Moss (I think small, but I don't rememer), and... one of those really big black and white ones... I don't remember what they are called (or which model... if they have models). I can also tell it's better than my GTP (I think I have the Mk 2).
The one that was closest to the SRD's heat retention was the Moss, but the SRD retained more heat for a longer time.
One thing I would like to know is if the SRD scuttle is hand turned or done with extrusion methods.
Thanks,
Richard
Can someone give me a run down of the different scuttles. I don't know what a SRD scuttle nor the GTP. Website links would be great. I've done a good amount of searching and have found the Moss, Dirtybird, Georgetown, and that huge German one, which I really want to get, I just dont have very much counter space, I'm going to find a way though. I still would like to explore all options. Thanks
I also do not have a lot of counter space and bought one from Georgetown, the one with about a 4" mouth- Work very well. I cheat a little- Installed a hot water dispenser to fill it.
Where can I get an SRD scuttle?
Sweet! Another str8 site! Now I have a few to browse through for options :) I ended up buying the SRD scuttle. I'll let you know what I think when it arrives.
I got the Mother Earth one. It looks great. Haven't used it yet tho. Probably tomorrow :)
SRD looks like a great scuttle. May have to get one to compare against my Dirty Bird 1.5.
Works great! Worth the money if you don't mind payin for toys :) I got the Mother Earth scheme. Looks great with wooden surroundings.
