Being a cast iron junkie in the kitchen I was looking at some of the small pots/bowls Lodge makes and it hit me that once the bugger was hot... it was going to stay hot and keep lather toasty warm alot longer than what I'm using now.
Has anyone tried these small cast iron bowls as a lather bowl?
i myself am a cast iron fiend.. i have a huge collection.. but mainly use my john wright 9 inch for as much as i can.. so i can season the shit out of it..
i also have stopped using my bare cast iron dutch oven in favour of a le crueset..
i never thought of using cast iron for lather.. my only concern would be over cooking the lather.. but maybe keeping a small enameled piece on a heating pad might be the answer.. a sure waste of electricity.. but damn classy..
i'll have to try.

Well I wasn't planning on using a heat source outside of hot water to get it up to temp... Cooked lather just doesn't sound appealing... :needcoffee:That post on my blog took it out of me lol, got a little crazy on making home made broth...
I'd imagine they work very well, especially at holding the heat!
Be sure to "season" it to avoid the inevitable rust.
Too heavy for me besides my wife might get mad and use it to thump me over the head.
When I got married, my wife introduced me to cast iron skillets. Wonderful devices at holding heat!
If it was good enough for her grandmother, it is good enough for me.
I never thought about lathering in them though. Thanks for the idea. And, stay tuned...

Picked up the Iron Pot today, ya it's in the oven seasoning it's first layer as we speak :p

Worked fantastic :) ran hot water over it till it was warm and the heat stayed with it for 2 lathers easy. Felt good working the lather as well. Not to small or large. I'm a happy camper :)

Well after 4 uses I still have not seen a spot of rust pop up and I still have great heat left over from the first lather. I haven't tried a third yet and may give that a shot next time.
I'm not sure about this but it seems the texture of the inside of the bowl helps the lather build a bit faster. It seems to need more testing :p
so i started using my 6 inch enameled skillet and it simply takes way too long to heat up.. wish i had an old radiator heater in my house i could set it on or something.. how long does yours take to heat up with the water? and doesn't your retain some level of the lather? i'd be concerned of mixing different scents over time.
I haven't been able to smell any left overs in the bowl. I would think the brush would hold more left overs then the bowl. Mine takes only a couple minutes, about 20-30 strops (ya ok maybe I'm not super speedy stropper :p ) I also think the bowl shape focuses the heat better (SWAG) than a pan would, just a guess at the moment.
so i went ahead and got a small lodge piece the same as yours.. it does heat way faster.. kinda liked the look of the skillet much more though.

that's the one i got.. i havn't used it in awhile.. but it does work great.
How does one season cast iron?
I've been looking to get a set for my kitchen but didn't know they need to be seasoned.
The best way to season cast iron is to cook up some 'taters and onions and throw the first batch out as they will stick like glue to the iron, use plenty of oil or grease and burn it in slow.
i didn't season my lather bowl.. as i didn't want bacon grease on my face.

with all those bacon fanatics out there.. i'm sure it's only a matter of time before we get a bacon as splash.. there are already bacon scented candles why not some deodorant too?
You must remember that using a shave cream or soap that has any kind of fat product or oils in it will season the cast iron some.
