I had the g5,it holds less than 8oz of hot water, not good. You can order a dirydird that will hold over 24 oz of hot water and has a bigger bowl,to whip up lather.I would call dirtybird and i think they will make it for you.
I don't have either, but I am having a scuttle made for me by a local potter. I really liked the look of the geogetown G5, so that is the template that she is using but its bigger and hopefully have a brush holder. Doing it this way you can save on those shipping charges which is a bit much for international buyers.
I don't have experience with GS, but Julie at DB just custom made a double scuttle (HUGE). This thing is an animal and I can pot a plant in it. It look marvelous and I love how much room it has for lather :tu. I LOVE it. It holds a lot of water too. This size is not for hand holding. Most people get the 1.5 size. I can tell you that she does a fantastic job and her scuttles are top notch quality craftsmanship. Highly recommended :tu
GS is great! I have one and it does what I need...Now the bad part...The container has a small mouth and makes it hard to mix the lather with a small brush without clanging onthe sides..So great scuttle, just needs a wider mouth.:gl:
Gentlemen:
I must concur with my friend Robert on the Dirty Bird scuttle. I have the 1.5 and love it. There is plenty of room to lather, and it stays warm throughout the shave. I have had the Georgetown, the 1.3 or 1.4, I don't know their numbering system, and although it was quite pretty, I don't feel it did the job for me. I passed it on. So, yes, Dirty Bird gets my vote.
Regards,
Obie
I have the Georgetown G5. If you want hot lather forget it unless you just need it for a quick DE shave. It holds too little water and the walls are too thick. You might also consider the Oskar. I have one and it's just what the Doctor ordered.
I can't help you with a comparison since I only have the G5...but its a great scuttle in my opinion. I fill it and soak my brush while I shower and then refill it again with hot water before I shave and its fine. :)
Just received my Dirty Bird last week and it's excellent. I ordered the largest one they have and it's great. It's heavy, large and holds it's temperature for the whole shave. I think it holds about or at least 12 oz of water. I'll have to check.
Unfortunately I do not have a Georgetown scuttle so I can not give an unbiased opinion.
I have both & they both work fine. The dirty bird does keep the lather warmer longer. But, I surround my scuttles with hot water from a kettle, so not an issue. If I had to choose just one I think I would go with the dirty bird. JMO
I agree that the G5 doesn't hold heat very well, but it's not too big a problem. I'll pop the plug, drain and give 'er a refill of hot water a couple of times. Takes but 10 seconds and it'll keep the lather fresh for a slow hour long weekend shave...
Here ya go, I was hoping I still had this pic. You have, from left to right, the Georgetown G5, DB 1.5, and the DB Custom Double. I love the double, it's great, holds 4 cups of hot water, and actually keeps your lather warm. Also, for some reason, it's much easier to build lather in a larger scuttle...Creams that were so so for me, now lather up better....Big +1 for DB's Double...
It's kinda dramatic when you see the G5 next to the Double, I can't imagine how I built lather in it, My Rooney barely fits in it...
The only plus I have for the GTP G5 is the cork; However, it doesn't seem to matter, because it really doesn't keep lather warm, As previously stated, it's walls are too thin....
Dang you Rich. Looks like I need to order a double now. I am really disappointed in the two that I currently have and that is a beaut.
i have the DB 1.5 and love it, i wonder how i ever used to make lather in that tiny mug i used to use. i have never tried any other one so i cant make a fair comparison but i do love my DB
that double DB is HUGE i make to much lather in my 1.5 as it is, but now i want one lol

I just got my Georgetown G5 yesterday and shaved with it this morning. First, the scuttle is much bigger than the pictures convey(look at the scale of the SR), it swallowed my Wool Fat puck and I got the best lather yet(compared to using a coffee mug). I don't know what the water capacity is but it kept the scuttle hot through out my shave. BTW nessmuck, are you sure the DB holds 24oz...a bottle of wine holds 27 ounces...are you saying that the DB holds close to a bottles worth of water? I admittedly have no reference point for other scuttles but I have to say the workmanship is outstanding and I personally like the symmetry of it's cast/molded body. The glaze is gorgeous to my taste.
I have an older model of the Georgetown Pottery scuttle. It keeps my lather warm long enough for me to shave in the a.m. I liked it so much that I got one for my son about two years ago.
I have heard, however, that the Dirty Bird scuttle is a superior scuttle in terms of keeping lather warm longer.

Tha is the same one I bought. I think it holds enough water..I fill it with hot water and it holds the heat fine. The well and ribbed bowl is good for mixing....The cork is a nice add on because without it I would slop water while mixing..The only issue I have with it is the smaller mouth...I don't care for the clanging on the sides while I mix..The DB is nice, but I don't know if I would want something that big on my sink? There is a point of too much..:gl:
1 cup = 8 oz and zibs scuttle holds 4 cups, so 4x8 = 32oz. Now i think my math is right. So you can dump a quart of milk in that scuttle!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree, I suppose if I had a deeper medicine cabinet or a larger sink counter I would enjoy the oversized DB but as I mentioned in my first post, the G5 is already bigger than expected. Again, as a new comer to SR shaving I have no other reference. As for heat retention, I fill the G5 with hot tap water once to warm it up and then drain and refill to start lathering...stays nice and hot for the duration of my shave.
I think I'm beginning to see the appeal of the Dirty Bird, if it in fact gets hot and stays hot on the first fill then it's worth the real estate it takes up. I have to admit I wish I didn't have to refill the G5 2-3 times to get it hot. Also, i sent an email to Georgetown Pottery telling then that they need to increase the height of the scuttle to allow for more sidewall area. I realized that my lather was really heated more from the brush than the scuttle.
Used my new DB 1.5 last night...it was everything they said it would be. I've used other scuttles in the past, but this particular one was an eye opener. Stayed warm (not lukewarm) for the duration of my 4 pass shave, never needed to reheat the water, lather didn't break down at all...and sturdy enough to stay put while I built my lather to begin with. I look forward to my next shave.
just got my db cant wait to use it tonight
