    Default Scuttlebut on scuttles

The rumor is these are designed for MEN...

But in my search for the world's perfect scuttle to take it's home next to my razor, I found a puzzling thing. There are floral patterns and pink designs EVERYWHERE on shaving bowls/scuttles. Obviously these horrible objects were concieved based on the principles of supply and demand, so this can only mean that the men of earlier days may not have been men of the house at all!! I have an idea that they were forced to adorn their bathroom counters with flowery pink vazes to appease their greater half.

    Thoughts?

I leave the toilet seat UP if I please.

Scuttles have been around much longer than bathrooms. They were left decorative because they were left in a bedroom which was probably decorated by the women in the first place. Also from what I understand they were primarily used by women as well as were the razors. Women generally shaved their men.

I agree completely with your observation. "Vintage" scuttles were almost always part of a dressing set. And these were always picked by (& pitched to) women, hence the numerous pink bands & cutesy flower patterns stenciled on the sides. I searched in vain for a decent antique scuttle but ended up buying a great modern example from SRD (thank goodness for the store!).

Wow, no wonder the life expectancy was so low back in those days. There is no way I'd let my wife put a straight razor to my throat! Ha!

    Very nice setup Blix

That was just the style back in those days. No different than clothing folks wore (men wore a lot of paisley in the late 1800s) and wall paper for instance and furniture often had floral motifs.

Marriages would probably be happier if the former was the case, because of the latter. "hmm, better let her buy that pair of shoes, she's going to be shaving me tomorrow."

Though I also wondered about the floral-filled scuttle designs from days of yore, I must agree with the others, the decorating was likely done by the lady of the house.

I was looking for something old and rustic to use when I started using DEs and all I could find were flowery themed scuttles. It's weird when ya think about it....."hey, I'm gonna go put a cold, steel blade to my face and scrape my beard off....where's my pot with the pink flowers on it?" haha Settled for a new Moss scuttle.

I am, actually... but I have my own bathroom/sink area in the master bedroom.
