How to use a vintage shave scuttle

I'm certainly unconvinced about the boiling water. Hot water, maybe... boiling, I doubt it.

Look at your sink,
Take the Hot Water Knob/Faucet off there
Now use the Scuttle, and things begin to make more sense

I usually just take the hottest tap water from faucet fill scuttle and let everything sit in that water while I shave .. get out of shower dump scuttle refill with tap water then start the lather..

Well, whatever works for you I suppose. Certainly not the way I have used a similar scuttle and definitely not convinced you need hot water to produce a good lather either. Been cold water shaving for over 6 months now.

Nothing says you can't use cold water for the shave...

But these styles of scuttles were designed to hold hot water in the old days, nowadays we have choices :)

Basically you didn't need the scuttle for a cold water shave, back then you could just pump the cold water out lather and shave...

Now we don't even need the scuttle for a hot water shave, we can simply turn on the hot water lather and shave..

Not a big fan of a puck in there either... I find it works better to load the brush and put a touch of hot water in to the bowl of the scuttle to build ur lather

Yea, I know they were designed for using hot water in them and that was their choice back then too as they did have the cold water option out of the pump also. Could be the soaps back then made using hot a necessity, dunno. Really the only reason to use one today is for a bit of nostalgia and I am all for that. Using a DE with that set up is a little jarring too. YMMV

A good hint.

I've found the water I use to be getting cooler and cooler. Gone are the days of using water as hot as I could stand. Just applying room temp water will cause the whiskers to "pop up" the same as if they had been soaked in hot towels.
