Not sure how to ask this question, but here goes.
I'm 50. Of course, I have shaved for a long time. But the most I ever used before this place was a splash of aftershave every now and then. No balms, oils, Edt, cologne, body spray, etc., etc. Completely new to this.
So I ask, are there certain scents/brands that are unspoken "no no's" for a gentleman in his 50s, or does anything go, as long as I like it?
There isnt any rules regarding scents. Just as long as you and your lady like it, thats all that matters. And in some circumstances only if you alone like it. Har!!! So splash away!!!
No, it's up to you. However, a lot of people comment on the 'old' scents like Old Spice and Pinaud Clubman to say they smell like 'an old man scent', basically because they remember their father or grandfather using it. So, I guess if you want to smell your age, get some Old Spice or Clubman :D

But since you did,,,,Avon would be a great choice, because that is the aftershave/cologne that most of us guys in our 50's started with.
Also, it can still be found cheap, gets lots of looks from the ladies (they remember it from high school days ;) )
& it comes in all kinds of neat containers,,,,:shrug:

True. Old Spice was the only thing I used for about 30 years. Still like it.

As others have said, there really are no rules regarding this.
However, I will wear a scent only if it ticks all three boxes in my selection regimen.
1. I like it
2. My wife likes it. Or at the very least isn't put off by it.
3. It doesn't associate negatively on me in regards to my surroundings.
After all, they are to smell it too, when in a crowded elevator, a small meeting-room or whatnot.
So, no Old Spice, 4711 or Brut for me, to name a few really stinky ones;)

I've yet to get a negative response to it. I'm near your age and never used aftershaves before, beyond witch hazel USP. But all the new wet-shavers are nuts about aftershaves, so i started trying the cheap "old name" stuff. Have Barbasol green, Aqua Velva Blue, Skin Bracer, Old Spice, and Pinaud Clubman in the shave nook right now. Rarely touch anything but the Clubman. It smells more "barber shop" than "old man". Not that there's anything wrong with that!
What i like about after-shaves is that they're not colognes. You might choke folks out with the scent for about 10 minutes, but it fades rather quickly, whereas a funky cologne stinks for days with one application.
Hi, and welcome to SRP. :chapeau As for scents if you, and your wife like it use it.
I think that the older you are the more options are available to you. Sometimes people will say that a scent is "old" or consider a scent for older men. Hence it may not have any appeal for a young guy. I think the concept of age appropriate is something younger men might be concerned with but not older men.
At my age any scent I want to wear is age appropriate, put my time in and earned that right. It may be of concern to younger men who have not yet learned you can't stay young forever.

I'm pretty sure the majority of fragrances we discuss on the forums would be considered "old man scents" by those of a certain age LOL
On the flip side of the coin, something along the lines of Axe would most certainly be considered a "young man scent" and wouldn't be age appropriate for anyone over the age of 20....:rofl2:

I can't speak for anyone but me. I usually splash on what ever my wife gives me for Xmas. After all she's the one i'm close to.
If you like the way it smells, use it. If you don't, don't.
As a student pushing thirty who regularly uses Clubman around a bunch of 18-22 year olds I have definitely gotten my share of "old man" comments. But who really cares, I like the way it smells and SWMBO doesn't complain.
As far as scents that are too young, as stated above, stay away from axe and I think that there will not be an aftershave that's off limits.
I have a friend in his 40s who's only wearing Axe. He's italian too, so it's not like there is a deep reason to not know better.
I personally think a man in his 50s could go few levels above the supermarket stuff and use something from say the old british barbershop houses like trumper's - but it's a personal choice.
If used correctly the price shouldn't be a factor - it should take years to go though a regular bottle.
Different scents work differently with peoples body chemistry. I'm 29 and I will wear old spice almost every day. My girlfriend who is 44 says that she never liked old spice on anyone before. But on me she really likes it.
a good scent is Floid Amber, it's an A.S. with an age appropriate scent.
Old ma not so old...infact i use it with satisfaction.(i'm 27)
Floid blue is fresh and ageless...very good.
My father (50) use Denim... and when i use it the scent is different (bit )
Of course different temperature and acidity of skin change scent.
Two polar examples.
Ever notice when you walk into the house of really olde people, there is a distinct and unpleasant funk? Okay.
Ever notice how when you walk into a 17 year old boys room, it smells like a nest of weasels? yep.
As our body goes through chemical changes, such as the myriad of changes collectively known as "decay", our natural scent changes. The trick is to find scents that compliment whatever our natural body chemistry smells like.
I think, for example, that vertiver stinks fine when combined with that weasely odor of teenagers, but (in the words of one SRP contributor) smells like someone pissed on a campfire when applied to old folk.
You get the drift. My recommendation: drag your daughter to mens section of the perfume aisle, get squirted until she finds a scent she likes, buy shave product in that same general family. Why daughter or other youngish female relative? Our noses grow distinctively less sensitive overall, and distinctively more 'colorblind' as we age.

Are there agree appropriate scents? Yes, my boys are to young to wear any of my top shelf stuff until they can afford to buy it themselves. ;)
I seem to remember you mentioned 4711 was quite frowned upon by European men because of its reputation of being an old ladies favorite. I don't think you were alone in the observation.Quote:
