Hit a few snags with first shave, no nicks, no cuts. Had to finish the neck and under my jaw line with a cartridge razor though.
I slashed some Panaud Clubman on afterwards and sent all the dogs in the neighborhood into a panic attack.
The old lady doesn't like the scent, I am not a fan of the "sting." I was looking at Maggards trial of Proraso products, but really looking for a good aftershave to enhance the experience.
Any input welcome.
Just starting out try a balm to cool any irritation. I used Aveeno. Thayer's is great. Skin food by Trumpers is pretty good. Remember you do not need pressure to shave. Eventually alcohol based aftershaves won't sting but cool. I used Proraso as well but it does have a mild sting when learning

Get some Nivea post balm for sensitive skin. It is unscented and has no burn. It is by far the best I have found. I think I got mine at Walmart.
I have the same issue with my neck and this takes care of the burn. Also, watch your pressure. This will also help.
I do a cold water wash before aftershave - if I use aftershave. I often like the smell of just the soap.
I did a few cold water splashes and then patted dry. After I felt my face, splashed the aftershave on. I think I'm gonna try something with less sting next time. My cartridge shave routine was hot water, can cream, shave and then shower. Now its shower, shave and hop back in the shower to rinse the hairs off. Some how I got stubble all over the place... I'll work a cleaner routine next time lol
As your technique improves the sting will diminish. In the mean time there is Proraso and several other pretty good balms. I really like the L'Occitane balm
Cold water rinse, pat dry, then witch hazel. After it dries, then use the aftershave.
The nivea is also good choice. It is cheap, has no burn, and works well.
As RezDog said, as your technique improves the sting will go away.
I don't use aftershave or balm. No problems with irritation, that way.

nivea sensitive balm is what i use if i suspect razor burn. Tis good stuff.

Your technique will improve and irritations and nicks go away don't worry. Follow advices above and yes Nivea is cheap, common and effective.

Last night I made a super lather with Col. Konks lime glycerin and Proraso red. I also did my whole face. The aftershave I used was different too. Masters Checkered Flag that the guy from Rubinovs suggested. Used a hot towel wrap first. This combination worked nicely. Just a few minor nicks but the burn wasn't as bad as the first shave.
