If I use an alum block do I still need to use an aftershave? I know that a styptic pencil is for closing a cut, but can an alum block do that also? How many of these products do I need?

You can use an alum block after your shave and it will take care of minor weepers and cuts. It also is slightly antiseptic and will tighten your skin a bit too. If you use it be sure and thoroughly rinse your face afterwards.
For more major lacerations a styptic pencil is more useful. They are cheap and handy to have around just in case.
Up to you whether you use either an alum block or an aftershave or both. Personally I use both and have a styptic pencil handy too.

Alum block on a wet face, let sit a few minutes and rinse face thoroughly with water. The apply your aftershave to your dry face.
I would keep in mind that both the alum block and the aftershave will sting your face if you messed up the shave by irritating your skin. The more irritated you have made your skin the more sting there is. They are a good barometer of how well you are doing with your technique and how good your edge is.
You could by pass both the alum block and aftershave and go with an aftershave balm. The key word being "balm" designed to sooth irritated skin. Something like Nivea Extreme Comfort is very good and easily available.

Keep at it long enough, the day will come when you will not use alum Blocks or steptics:)
I echo what BobH said; my method is to use the alum followed by aftershave (the styptic rarely comes into play). I use the alum because I like how it tightens my skin, and for its antiseptic properties. Aftershave is used as a conditioner and a fragrance.
Get some strong aftershave "with lots of alcohol splash on" that way you can take a drink of it for pain, and then bite down on the block of alum. Then continue shaving ! LOL
I have an alum block, but I rarely use it. I just go with witch hazel and then aftershave or a balm.
The styptic pencil is nice to have when you need it. Especially if you pop your earlobe or nose - or a finger!
1. You do not need any of these products... But even if you use an alum block, the aftershave could still be useful to sooth irritation, moisturize the skin, provide a cooling sensation, and have a pleasant smell. I find that the alum block can sometimes dry the skin a bit, and as others have already mentioned, may cause a bit of burning sensation.
2. The alum block may stop minor bleeding from scrapes or irritation, but the styptic pencil is better for cuts or slashes.
3. Again, you don't absolutely need any of these, but I personally have all three available in case they are needed. Another great use for the alum block is to rub on your fingers, witch will prevent them from slipping when you try to stretch your skin.
I have some styptic gel but sometimes I have to go straight to the super glue. Come on....I know I am not the only guy on here that has had to super glue their face back together!! Hold closed and glue on top. (not in)
Super Glue....for when the Styptic just won't get it done.:tu
I'll admit that I have a bottle of liquid bandage right beside the styptic pencil and beside that is Neosporin plus pain relief. So far I haven't had to use the liquid bandage on my face, just my finger.
I know super glue was invented to treat sports injuries, but the only kind I can find at the store has a bunch of warnings on the label that lead me to believe it might be toxic...
Medical superglue is different from commonly available ones at stores. Interesting read superglue — REAL First Aid .

Shallard I just learned something. I did not know the alum on your fingers trick. I wonder if it works on your feet? Now I can do one of those Kung Fu white crane maneuvers washing one foot at a time with no fear of ice skating to my death in the shower. I am going to blame you if I have to get stitches in the back of my head. lol Just kidding !
The super glue is toxic to burn, but it is great for practical jokes I recommend keeping a lot of it on hand ! :tameshigiri:
I have never owned or used a styptic pen or alum block an that has worked just fine. It might be nice to have but you don't need any of those. I have never had any problems being without it. When I get the occasional minor cut they stop bleeding after a little while without aid from the styptic pen or alum block.
