hmm I wonder about Witch Hazel. I use it because it's natural for the most part. It does have a tiny bit of alcohol in it. Then I can use any cologne I want without conflict. Reason...my colognes are very expensive and without having to buy the aftershave that goes with it I get more variety. But back to topic :<0) it may be good for your skin too I just don't know.
Obie and Razorfeld. If PortlandJosh is around, he's had to look hither & yon for quality ASB for sensitive skin also.
Is this the Proraso you are asking about?
If so,....yes it is good, at least for me.
Our climate is very dry so I don't use alcohol based after shaves only balms.

The art of Shaving after shave balms are really nice for sensitive skin.
I've still to find anything better than Nivea Aftershave Balm for Sensitive Skin. Leaves about as neutral a feeling as air. But I do on occasion, when I want that kick in face effect (and only rarely), I will use a little dab of 444, a Portuguese aftershave gel. But all Dove also makes an AS Balm. Tried several and keep coming back to the Nivea.
Second order of thayers witch hazel and aloe vera on the way to me. Still not managed to try it, post shattered first order. If the ingredients have been stored correctly (aloe vera especially) this should be good.
I am also a fan of the white Proraso, small white glass jar, not as shown above.
Because of the hype around The Body Shop maca shaving cream and an O2 Priority deal I grabbed myself a tube of TBS maca shave relief which I'll be trying out over the weekend and will report back.
By sensitive skin, do you mean that you don't like the alcohol-based aftershaves that leave a quick burn or that they do something to your skin? It's more of a curiosity than help. I've never used a balm, just aftershave (Old spice, Aqua Velva etc).
Have to say I agree with the Nestle boycott. No matter how good the product.
You might also try Noxema.
I have used it as a pre-shave cleanser for the past month and my skin has really enjoyed the extra moisturizer. Cheap, and it goes a long way.
Nivea for sensitive skin! Wish I had found it sooner. I do 1-2 hits of witch hazel and then the balm. My necks turns red when it sees a razor always has, but I this works great for me.:gl:
Proraso White ASB is excellent. I wish I could use it, but I am allergic to the sweet almond in it.
So I switched to Nivea Sensitive ASB. Works about as well for healing as Proraso, but I didnt like the scent.
So I tried some other stuff, and ended up with a pair that I have been using for a few weeks: Speick, and a few minutes later (not immediately!), RazoRock AS Wax.
The healing is absolutely there. Better than the Proraso White ASB, which I thought was the best. And the combination of the scents is pretty awesome.
For sensitive skin you need quality products.
For me, the best aftershave balm for a sensitive skin, especially for the winter, is K3 ekstra from Fitjar:

Too bad it is not available any more. I keep it safe in the fridge with my old P.160 as if it was gold.

Sometimes, I don't use a balsam and I prefer to apply a tiny ammount of unrefined shea butter with excellent results (if you don't mind the natural scent of shea butter):

I completely agree. A little goes a long way and without the burn some other creams can leave on the face. Hours after a shave the AOS creams keep the skin hydrated and the wife happy.Quote:

I really like nivea balm sensitive. It has no burn, leaves skin soft, an doesn't irritate me at all. On top of all that its $5. I use it 3-1 over my expensive aftershaves.
I have fairly sensitive skin and have been using Taylor of Old Bondstreet and really enjoy it. It feels great on my skin and I enjoy the scent as well.
Speick AS Balm I found to be pretty good stuff with a mild pleasing scent. It's made for sensitive skin.

I just started using a Bay Rum Balm by Gilbert Henry. I think it is a fairly new company, but I really like it. It has a slight warming sensation, but is alcohol and paraben free, so very good for sensitive skin. The smell is great and not overpowering.
Stuff that has lavender in it is generally good for sensitive skin.
I've found Em's balm and Mama Bear's winter balm both to be soothing for my easily-irritated, sensitive skin.
Musgo Real is fairly mild, goes on slick with no sting and little scent.
I am quite satisfied with Baxter's of California.
I have pretty sensitive skin too, but I've found that a splash of Thayer's (I enjoy the superhazel) followed by Penhaligon's ASB does the trick.

I'll give a second recommendation for Em's balm. I've tried just about everything out there and this stuff is the best. The marketing, name, and bottle aren't sexy. And there isn't any delicious scent to entice you either. But it performs better than any of the others.

Making your own balm is actually pretty easy and quite satisfying. I use an all natural hand or face lotion,( unscented) you can choose one with the ingredients you like if it matters. Then I add a couple drops of my favorite essential oil for fragrance, mix and enjoy. One of the advantages is the cost, you can save quite a bit of quid and enjoy a customized product to your liking. Your local first grade art class can help with the labels if you ask nice enough!
I myself use Nivea after shave it is anti-bacterial and for sensitive skin. But i have read some really responses. Hope one of them works out for you.
Sensitive skin guy here. I am a big fan of fake-Thayers Witch Hazel with aloe. Nothing wrong with Thayers, by the way, but I fill the empty bottle 2/3 with generic witch hazel, several tablespoons (by eye) of cold-processed aloe, a couple of ounces of isopropyl alcohol (optional) and some essense/scent (optional). I have very happy with 30-drops of lemon essence per bottle.
Nice on the skin after a shave, the scent (or not) of your choice, dries fast, cheap.
When I have wreaked havoc on my face with a straight, I usually use the Nivea After Shave Balm, generic version. The drug store that I get it from (I dont' think I can mention their name here) has their own generic brand sitting right next to the Nivea, same looking container and size. I bought the Nivea first, when that ran out, I tried the generic. I have been unable to detect any difference between the Nivea and the generic; smells the same feels the same, except in price, it's cheaper. I haven't tried a huge variety of balms, The Art of Shaving balm is nice but really pricey. I had a problem with some of the balms really giving me a painful burning senation. No burn at all with the Nivea and no fragrant scent to conflict with cologne you might want to wear. I'm sure there are many other balms out there that perform just as well, just the one I like. :)
Hi dmnc: I'm not familiar with the "Nestle Boycott" that you mention and I didn't see a post above that you may have been referring to. What is going on with Nestle and what shaving products do they sell? Thanks, Joe
The Navea after shave balm for sensitive skin is a good cost effective one and easy to get. If you want to spend more, there are other options.

I bought a new bottle of Nivea Sensitive a short while ago. It has a new formula and the bottle says "No Drying Alcohol". I guess the old formula must have had some alcohol in it?
I think the Nestle boycott has something to do with ethics and baby formula.
Butters may also help in sensitive skin.
I use a mix of butters. It is made with pure unrefined shea butter, pure unrefined cocoa butter, pure macadamia butter, mango butter and some coconut oil. A very small amount is applied to my hands and then to my face.

I recently found a "Shea Moisture" product "SHEAMOISTURE TEA TREE AFTER SHAVE & BUMP PREVENTER". It was on the discontinue rack so I bought all three bottles. So far I like it. My skin is smooth, moisturized and seems to heal pretty fast using this product. I've had a problem in the past with razor bumps and minor irritation so I thought I'd give it a try. I've been using their "3 Butters Body Wash" and have really seen a difference during the winter months. I don't have to use any moisturizer, lotion to deal with my skin being too dry, (don't like the feeling of stuff on my skin). Seems like every winter I used to end up with itchy, dry skin but no more. It does have a little burn immediately after application but that is gone by the time I've spread it around my head and face.
I have used the Nivea for Sensitive Skin and liked it but I like "splashes" instead of "balms". I think I've started to look forward to the burn.......lol, and the smoothness. Definitely liked the bottle of Ogallala, peppered bay rum. Only problems I had with it... didn't shake it enough to keep the essential oils equally dispersed, (bottom of bottle different than top, alcohol seemed to be up top w/no burn in the end) and the bottle doesn't last forever! My other has been the Pinaud Clubman for the Friday users club. Anyone who claims that Pinaud doesn't have any holding power has never sweated with the stuff on. I started looking around the gym to see who around me might be wearing it......... it was mine really coming out with a bit o cardio. :D
