Thread: Post Head Shave Question

As a rule I don't do head shaves but recently several people have come in requesting them. I did them, and then they asked about returning as a regular customer (for a head shave) every 2 weeks so I agreed.

The shaves have all gone well with no nicks,cuts or razor burn so there is no problem there but what I am looking for is some advice on what to use as a post shave. I am looking for something that is not astrigent but rather some kind of soothing lotion to rub on afterwards. What I did was just rub some talc/powder in and it worked well. I have read on here about Nivea and Neutrogena and will pick some up but does anyone have any other ideas? I'm afraid to use the same stuff I use on faces because the head doesn't get shaved as much and may be a little more sensitive.

The hair on the head is definitely more sensitive.

I highly recommend staying away from anything heavy or oily as the scalp can get acne very easy with these products.

When I used to shave my head, there was nothing I enjoyed more than a good mechanical exfoliation. Many head shavers do the same.

I mentioned this on another thread, but slybaldguys.com has a lot of discussion on what head shavers use on their domes.

Finally something I have a bit of experience on

I have tried several products, and have usually wound up with a bit of acne as a result.
The best thing I have found this far, (I have been shaving it for about 15 years) is a product from Biotherm Called Aquapower.
It's not an After-shave product per se, but it works wonders for me.

I've been head shaving for 15yrs or more and on the rare occasion when i do use a lotion i choose plain and simple baby lotion then wipe the excess off the same goes for my face. I have tried some more expensive non-greasy lotions but they just run out of coverage too soon if you get what i mean

Well I can only tell you what I've used thus far. My post-shave treatment is usually as follows: cold water rinse, witch hazel when the skin is dry, and then TGQ aftershave, again when the skin is dry.

On occasion I'll use bay rum instead of TGQ's aftershave. If I use bay rum then I'll apply a drop or two of jojoba oil afterward.

Thanks for reminding me. It has been a few years since I shaved my head, but yes, cold rinse is recommended by many head shavers.

I shave my head and put the same stuff I put on my face - QED Skin Conditioner. Works great and no issues.

I just slap on the Old Spice.
It stings a bit, but sure does leave a nice smooth feeling; there's no razorburn after that, and I've never had an acne problem.

i have been using the witch hazel, and after that dries i just use some avveno lotion, and it has made a huge difference on the way my scalp feels later on

+1 for witch hazel. My favorite is Thayer's Cucumber / Aloe. I don't do a complete head shave but rather just the large top area that is already bald in order to take care of those few unruly hairs that didn't get the word that all the rest had abandoned ship back in my HS days.

I was really tempted to post caranuba wax as it has been my mainstay joke with barbers for years. I chide them for charging me for a full head of haircut when I have far less than a third of the norm to deal with. I figure the least they could do is give me a nice buff job. Therefore with new barbers I always ask if they have any caranuba wax available. When they give me the standard puzzled response I proceed to explain. More often than not they enjoy the humor although there have been a few who took exception. Ah well....
