I have sensitive skin and coarse hair so I'm prone to irritation, ingrowns and the like. What I find works for me is this
Pre-Shave
1) Wash with a skin clearing foaming wash.
2) Use a mild scrub to get all the gunk out
3) Get lather on my face and rub it in
4) Re-lather and shave
I cold water rinse between passes to try and prevent pore clogging from the lather.
Post shave
1) Astringent (I like witch hazel, it's mild and natural)
2) Let dry
3) Wash, carefully to avoid irritation, with a mild cleanser (Nivea Sensitive skin works for me)
4) Aftershave optional (Nivea for sensitive skin)
5) Moisturize (something that's not greasy, Again I go for Nivea)
This might sound like overkill but the amount or brand of product is not really what matters. What I'm getting at is this:
Make sure your skin is clean before you shave, make sure you don't clog pores with lather and wash and treat afterward. It works for me YMMV.:gl:
Wow you must have skin of steel.
I find on this forum about once every couple of months a new member who asks about irritation and most times I find that they use a scrub of some sort and when they eliminate the scrub they have fewer problems.
Some acne treatments can be quite irritating to the skin. It partially depends on what type of acne treatment you use. I would recommend that you contact a doctor and ask. I believe, though that you might want to avoid using the two together, but rather start by alternating days. I don't know where you are located, but this time of year is harsh on skin in my area, I would want to try mixing the two when the weather is more forgiving.
It would also depend on if you have used this product in the past and how it reacted with your skin.
I find that a pre-shave scrub helps me with ingrown hair (better shaving technique will probably help as well so I'm working on that). I also don't shave daily (probably 2 times a week 3 times tops) and hence the steps described above are not a daily process...On non shave days I usually just go for a wash with a mild face wash and moisturizer. Hopefully I'll get to the point where better shaving replaces the scrub all together but I'm just not there yet.
Thanks,
I also find that I have pretty sensitive skin. I always felt like facial scrubs were counter productive to sensitive skin for me. This is especially true for me when using a straight. I don't feel that I need any extra exfoliation. I just used Nivea face wash in the shower before shaving and stay away from the exfoliating products. Just my opinion.
Nivea is my face wash of choice as well, perhaps I will drop the scrub and see what happens. maybe I'll be able to shave everyday??? Probably not but a boy can dream :boohoo:
BTW sorry to the OP as I seem to have hijacked his thread...I'll go away now
Well, I also had the same kind of irritation when using Proactive as an acne medicine a few years ago. The scrub felt too abrasive and I felt like I was rubbing sandpaper on my face.
I don't have acne problems, but I do have sensitive skin, and IME additional face abrasion above and beyond shaving can aggitate your skin and cause further irritation. Sometimes its good to keep it simple and avoid excessively abrading your skin.
Thanks for sharing this pre and post shave methods i implemnt this from next time hope it will sort out mine problem.:beer1:
