What's your favorite weeper cure?

Shaves are getting better and better. Today is the best yet. Almost no burn, near BBS. Still get the occasional weeper, especially on weekdays when I have to go to work. Just wondering what your favorite treatment is to stop weepers.

So far, my post shave routine is very simple:

Warm water rinse
Cold water rinse
Clinique Post Shave Healer

If you haven't tried the Clinique PSH, I HIGHLY recommend it. It has just the right amount of astringent to tighten the skin and provides moisture without being oily. You can find it at most department stores (I have my daughter pick mine up when she goes to Ulta to get nail polish).

I'm thinking I'll try some witch hazel as well, but am wondering about stiptic, alum, etc...

Honestly though, usually cold water is enough to close those pesky weepers. If for some reason it doesn't work then some alum will do the trick. Just be warned, it WILL sting, but feels really nice when the pain subsides.

I'd skip on the styptic. It will work for weepers, but it is meant for cuts. And it stings more IMO.

Cold water for me too. A little Alum on a very rare occasion.

I cut very easily but cold water and alum block usually do the trick. On the odd occasion where I nick something that they can't handle, hemostatic cotton wool is applied. One of the things that I love about straight razor shaving is the lack of cuts.

If I get a tiny cut I put lather over it and by the time I'm finished the bleeding is gone. Of course maybe if I didn't put the lather over it it might stop too.

I am with bigspendur if I still have passes to do I will just lather over it and by the time I am done shaving it will normally stop. If it pops up on the last pass typicaly cold water will do the trick.

I use cold water for a weeper. If I need to get serious then I hold an Ice Cube on that joker. After bleeding has stopped, I'll reach for Neosporin. Neosporin works for razor burn relief and recovery too. ymmv of course

I think that a "styptic pencil" _is_ alum -- a thin cylinder of alum.

That's what I use. It's not perfect, but it beats cold water, IMHO.

What do I do? Any thing but the styptic! I think I'd rather bleed to death. Using that little pen everytime you cut yourself will teach you not to cut yourself better than anything. Actually, it seems to me that sometimes the thing just plan hurts and other times its just a little sting.

I usually just splash with cold water, then use witch hazel and what ever aftershave I'm using that day. If I'm still bleeding I apply pressure. When the bleeding stops I always put some Neosporin (sp ?) on it.

I use the old dreaded styptic pencil :dropjaw: Actually I don't find it that bad and it works. I use the Alum Bloc after every shave so maybe I've numbed some of my senses to the sting of the styptic...lol.

Bought one and I'll give it a try. I still think I'm going to try the witch hazel too.

Thanks for all the comments. I use cold water (as indicated) and it doesn't always work. I have to wear a suit a tie to work every day, and showing up with bloody spots on my face just doesn't fit.

Get a little bottle of superglue with a brush applicator in it. Stop the basic bleeding with a styptic pencil -- come on, you're not 6 years old anymore, learn to ride the pain -- then a dab of superglue. (Does not sting) -- Surgeons use this --

One of Lynn's tips is to use triple antibiotic ointment on these. My experience is that this does promote healing, and does something to immediately stop the red stuff (it is pretty thick).

Prevention thru practice remains the best strategy, though.

+1, I rarely get weepers and prevention is absolutely the best treatment. On the rare occasion that I nick myself, I like to use styptic matches. They come packaged like a book of matches and each match is a one use item. It is much more hygienic than a styptic pencil IMHO.

Same here. I take meds to thin my blood so the weepers tend to flow a little more.
If the nic is just enough to leave the blood coagulating along the mark and not dripping down the skin, I leave it. The greater the flow then I progress to alum block, and then styptic.

If nicked on the first pass, and a weeper is still flowing after the between-passes rinse, I'll go right to the styptic before applying lather again.

Normally the cold water rinse and alum block coating, followed by witch hazel splash and aftershave at the end is more than sufficient.

Sometimes, if I get bit by one of the square points (always operator error :OT), I may just finish with the one pass and wait until tomorrow, or even 2-3 days later. If it becomes that severe then I use the Neosporin portable spray after applying initial first-aid methods.

I kid of course, I use a styptic pencil if I need to. It is slightly different than alum and it stops bleeding much faster.

I tend to just lather over it, like others. But if it's still weeping after the last pass, I reach for the styptic pencil.

A bit of Internet research shows that "alum" is aluminum sulphate.

"Styptic pencil" seems to be composed mostly of aluminum sulphate, with some titanium dioxide to give it a white color.

PS -- further Internet research shows that the above statements are simplifications. I will continue to use my styptic pencil -- it hasn't killed me yet.

Bought the small styptic pencil and gave it a try. A little stingy, but it really worked. Oddly, I had NO small weepers the next day. Negative reinforcement? Maybe, or maybe pure luck.

I am still considering the alum block, but if it is basically like rubbing a styptic pencil all over my face, I think I'll give my technique just a bit more time to improve. My weepers seem to be related to bumps, not nicks with the razor.

I ordered the Thayers witch hazel sampler pack and am looking forward to giving them a try.

Styptic is my middle name.

Styptic pencil and block alum are both made of alum, but not the same kind. Read the Internet for further clarification.

At any rate, I never get weepers, but still manage the occasional cut. Usually, I do a glacial cold water rinse, rub on my alum block, throw in some AS splash, and if that's not sufficient, a dust of talc. Does the job.

Forgot about talc. Now that's old school, right there.

Since my first styptic experience...no weepers. Still planning to use the witch hazel as so many seem to love it as a regular post shave treatment.
