Another Bay Rum question

I didn't want to tap into the existing Ogallala Bay Rum thread with this which I hope is the proper way to change the subject.

I keep reading about Bay Rum and have the distinct impression that if you're older than twenty-five, you should know what it smells like. While I'm just a tad -- okay, several tads -- older than that, I didn't recognize it by name. So I stopped by my barber and he let me smell some. I now know what it is. But I didn't think his was anything special. He said is was put out by a company named Stafans or something like that. It appeared to be a standard barbershop brand. My question is would the Ogallala brand smell better? I know that's a subjective question but maybe someone knows of the barber shop stuff and can offer a comparison.

By the way, I ordered a straight and stop from Larry Andro over at whippeddog.com and have to agree that he was very comfortable to deal with. I'm hoping the new (er, old I mean) razor arrives tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes.

I wish I could remember what the Stephan's smells like right now, it seems to be escaping me. Overall the best thread to read on the differences in bay rums is the Bay Rum parade started by gssixgun.
The Ogallala is a very clove/spice rich bay rum so if you like the more Christmas cookie smell with a nice bay shooter than this works out for you. I showered last night with Ogallala soap, shaved with Ogallala and splashed with Royall. It was a nice bay rum over load. Ogallala offers a sampler of splashes/colognes on his site, he also offers a shave soap sampler; this combo will give you an idea without spending a lot of dough.

Yes, they all smell different. Some radically and everyone has their favorite. Personally I think the Royall is the class brand but something like Dominica, or Sta Lucia is cheaper and pretty good stuff. The Clubman isn't bad but it's really not bayrum-too much cloves.

all bay rums differ.. the stephans is a nice sweet bay smell.. very basic and enjoyable.. the clubmans is move clove and cinnamon than bay and ogallala is much more sweeter and eggnogg like.. your best bet is to go checkout the bay rum parade thread and just start trying different ones.. some you will like.. others you won't.

Thanks, guys. I appreciate your help. I will try the Ogallala first, then sample some of the others. (Sigh!) This may take several years, So I guess I'll just try to buck up to it!

That sounds like a great idea. Warning: Bay Rum is an addictive scent, once one is appreciated all must be purchased.
If you like sandalwood try the ogallala version its great. Also, don't forget captain smith's, really good stuff.
The royall is nice, but the price reflects to a point. I think approx $54.

Check Eboy. A few times a year the distributor for Royall has a sale. You can get three 8oz bottles of Royall, any variety, for around $65 shipped.

Interesting, but have you checked Amazon yet? I have heard that they are cheaper.

Cheapest I have found search the internet tubes is $35 shipped for one 8oz bottle.

Skyguy, I started with Ogallala too. The only problem is Ogalalla smells soooo good (eggnog or gingerbread are good descriptions), the others (except for Pinaud) smell kind of dull. However, give Masters, Stephens and the others a fair try. They are more basic, but very nice.

masters has a very bright and enjoyable smell.. it really fills a room with a lovely scent.. i think everyone should try it at some point.

I like the Ogallala Original, and the Royall Bay Rhum. I think it was recommended to me on this very forum. Let me just say the Ogallala does have a bit of a burn to it, but it smells great ;)

An option is to order the Ogallala sampler pack (I think they call it the Bonanza pack). It contains 5 two-ounce bottles of the following:
-Bay Rum Cologne
-Bay Rum aftershave (a/s)
-Bay Rum w/Limes and Peppercorns a/s (far and away my fave)
