I'm interested in your opinions on thayers witch hazel, the scented ones. I have the medicated one which has aloe vera in it but I'm not sure how best to use them and what they do. Do you splash it on like AS or wipe it on with cotton wool? And as I said what do you find it does for you? I used them when I first started DE shaving a couple of years ago but didn't notice any difference and wonder now if that was due to too many new variables. I welcome your thoughts please.....
I am using Thayers Original with aloe vera after I shave. Splash some on my the palms of my hands and apply to my face. Seems to tighten the skin and refresh. I have oily skin and if I use an aftershave balm like Nivea my face gets too oily/greasy. I do use after shave too.

I've read their site and I like the sound of the lemon or peach astringents but as always prefer real world users opinions rather than marketing blurb! I don't want to end up putting too much on my face and causing irritation from too much product.
I use the Lemon Thayers as a pre-shave clean my face astringent. I spary a little on a cotton pad and wipe face to pull the dirt from my pores. The Thayers is real mild so I dont think you will have any irritation issues. The lemon scent is also very mild, hardly even notice.Quote:

I have the rose scented, I use it after shaving, pat it on like after shave. It's astrigent, I find it a lighter alternative to alum.
I like the lavender best, I use it heavy, much more than the aftershave.
I use the cucumber/aloe one (no alcohol) as an aftershave splash. For extra cooling in the summertime, I use it straight from the fridge--aahhh!
I use thayers as a splash after shaving. Then follow with lotion.
Other times I'll put it on a cotton ball and wipe, just to refresh my face.
I also have Thayer's aftershave which is more concentrated.

I've been using the lavender for over a year now as a splash after the shave but before the AS. The bottle is still going strong with enough to last probably another month of shaves.
Ok thanks for your thoughts. As you'll see from my SOTD post today I found a small bottle of Thayers medicated superhazel so I put some on before my AS. I felt the slight astringent sting like a very mild aftershave. I'll persevere for a week or two to see if there's any benefit for me.
I have Thayers with lemon, I started using it as a toner on a cotton pad post shave and just freshen up as I have oily skin, then I started using it as an AS splashing it on heavy as it is so nice and refreshing with a fresh cut light lemon smell which lasts a little. I will be replacing it and probably try another flavour too. Very versatile product, I have used it on a sting and I understand you can gargle with it?
When I was a child, it was used for mosquito bites and for facial astringent when people had acne. Also some people mix it with honey and aloe vera and drink it for colds. People gargle with it but I only know about the regular witch hazel, not the scented ones. I drank some when I was in fifth grade because some friends told me it had alcohol and my dad kept his brandy too high for me to capture. Anyway, I finally used it for after shave now that I'm shaving with a straight razor. Thayer's is great, I recommend the rose, and your post made me curious to try the lemon. My wife made fun of me for a while but when my youngest had something going on and had a red bum for a week we couldn't get rid of and he was in pain. I cleaned him up, splashed some on his bum and let him run around till it dried. After two days of doing this the irritation cleaned up well. Still had to sort out the GI issue but he was a happier baby.

I have used a variety of Thayers witch hazel offerings. The one on which I have settled the past few years is the Super Medicated with Aloe Vera. Mine is used after the alum and the cold water rinse. I pour a nickle size amount in my hand and apply it to my face, as I would an aftershave pour. The balm follows and finally the aftershave or cologne. Good stuff, this.
I use the unscented with Aloe toner.......Love it. Like Obie,I splash a small palmful before any AS goes on. Sometimes I wet a cotton ball and use it on various dry skin spots on on the face. Wikipedia has some nice info on witch hazel in general. Thank god for Thayers ! :D
Can anyone note differences between the astringent and the toner? I have the unscented astringent right now and love it, but would like to try some of the scents of the toner as well.
Thayer's without alcohol is marked as toner. With alcohol is astringent.Quote:

I have generic USP distilled witch hazel (Active ingredient: Hamamelis Virginianna Linne, Inactive:Ethyl Alcohol) and it does nothing for me other than dry my skin out and make it more red/irritated. Is Thayers a different formulation and would it work better?
Thayers is alcohol free and most, if not all contain aloe vera.Quote:
