I've found that the cream that I apply before my shave cream , actually softens my whiskers even more. It washs off easy & no residue.

I think there might be other more appropriate sites that discuss lathering over the farmer's friend.
To the OP, I use Proraso which is a pre and a post shaving product. I honestly don't know what it does, I do know that if feels good, smells good and costs little per application. I lather over it. If you ever get heavy handed with your blade it makes a super post shave soother. It is part of the ritual now as a preshave and really all I can say is to try a few and see if they make a difference that justifies the cost.
I can say what I use, and why. After washing my face (usually Noxema), I apply Neutragena moisturizing oil with Sesame to my damp skin. After a minute or two, I blot completely dry with a soft towel. I go on to building a cold lather. The idea is that the wash removes old dirty oils, and the moisturizing oil replaces them. Since it's all absorbed before I lather, the oil doesn't kill the lather.
Ive purchased several pre shave lotions & oils, but to be honest I've never felt that it did me much good. I think my hot towel treatments suit me much better, and is more effective for me.
