I have no doubt it can be done. I do no prep and use cold water for my shaves but that is about as simple as I want to make it at this point. Just can't bring myself to forego the luxury of a nice lather.
No doubt also that it will reveal any short comings in your blade or technique.

Now my 20 minutes of relaxation while the house is quiet in the morning will be cut in half. I have to get my brushes on eBay. Hot towels and lather for me. Nice to know it could be done though.
Yes it can be done , we used to dry shave in the bush too. But I enjoy the lather part with the scents and smooth blade glide, now I do not relather, after my first pass it's cold water and go back and get the other passes and touch ups just keeping the face wet, so I agree it works fine if your razor is right. Just need my lather to start for the experience of it. Tc
Funny you posted this.
I wanted to give one of my recently shaved with razors a try without stropping or any prep and see how effective the edge still was.
I dry shaved a WTG pass last night in front of the tv. Staring at the mirror this morning, I had a few moments trying to figure out why it was that I had a couple of blood sport beneath my lip that hadn't been there from yesterday morning's shave. Then it dawned on me. The edge was still effective, though expect more resistance without your normal prep.
I think soapless shaving is horrible, hateful rumor mongering thing that, if it catches on, could devalue my 20-year soap/cream inventory. Next thing people will be talking about soapless shaving with - what? - electric blades?
My touch ups are water only - always smooth, no irritation. Never thought to try a whole shave soapless. Interesting. I'll have a go in 20-years.
I've done it as well. With both a straight and a double edge. It isn't as comfortable but it works. I can also use burlap to wipe my rear end after I use the bathroom, but I choose not to for similar reasons.
I used to shave with just water when i was a teen and used cheapo cartridge razor blades. Guess with a thinner beard and oily skin it wasn't an issue. If i'm in a rush, its no time to be using a straight.
