I have heard both ways and tried both ways and honestly can't tell difference. One says to wash, remove the dirt and oil, allowing your facial hair to better absorb water during prep as well as getting the junk off of your face before you put a razor to it. The other side says, no don't wash, use the oil on your skin as an extra lubricant for your shave.
What do you think? Do you wash your face before shaving?
I've always washed before shaving, never questioned it!! I'm curious to read peoples oppinions on this.Quote:

Well shaving with a brush is a cleaning tool actually. Remove dirt oil dead cells... So my routine is wake up get a hot shower or simply wash yhe face with hot water face lather shave and apply moisturizer. And on nights i wash mu face with washing gel (5.5 ph and do not dry skin) apply moisturizer and get sleep. Thats all i think
Two hot towels.
Lather after first towel. Apply second towel over lather. Then lather again and shave

I used to wash my face vigorously with soap twice before shaving, as part of the prep. Once I got into the cold water shaving, a few years ago, I only splash my face with water, lather, and rub that in. Re lather. That is my prep. Working as well, or better than what I used to do.
Try it one way for a week, then try it the other way for a week. See which works best for you.
I use no prep routine just wet my face with cold water, load my brush and vigorously face lather. Always thought the brush and shave soap does a fine job of scrubbing my face and taking care of the sebum. Seems to be working out just fine.

Olive oil soap. Then lather and shave.
I wet my face, then apply Cetaphil for gentle skin, and leave it on while I whip a lather in my scuttle. Once done rinse my face then apply lather. It works good for me, because I have roseaca!!!
Interesting thread. I usually only shave after a shower, and I wash my face while in there. I am actually going to try it the other way tomorrow.
I generally shower before shaving, i use a face scrub with exfoliating bits in it. Sometimes that is 10 or so hours previous if I shave in the morning as I shower before bed. Usually it is directly previous of within an hour or so.

I usually shave right after I shower before bed so my macs is clean before I shave.
I am a shower an wash face with facial cleanser before shaving. I tried the cold water thing an just didn't do it for me. The shower is part of the routine for me as I have a very dirty job an must shower at minimal once a day. Sometimes twice. Feel the hot shower an face wash gets me better prepared for a close shave. I voted yes but really it is just because I usually shave after a shower .... but if I have a new razor in the mail I generally just ;ather and go after it is honed or is ready to go !! ..lol
I only shave after a shower and do wash my face with soap in the shower.
Before you do any work on anything you clean it thoroughly. No different with your face.
That sounds like a wonderful shaving experience but I'd be late for work everyday.....might just have to be late one day!:DQuote:

I thought it was universally accepted that washing before lathering up, prepared the beard for removal by softening it up?
At least that's what I thought. I know every morning before I shave, just before I soap up, I decry, " Brace Beard!! Be prepared to be conditioned!!". :)
Yes, I wash. I get good and wet from splashing, use Dove soap (my wife's) and scrub up. Then I rinse well, really getting my face wet and lather up, recently I've been face lathering. That's what works best for me. YMMV.
TBH, I figure if I lather-up a brush, scrub my face with it, A few hot towel treatments, Lather up again, My face has been scrubbed.
Don't see a need to do further. After all, shaving includes exfoliation as well. Finishes the job! :D
I do, however, shave in the morning and certainly wash my face every nite in the shower!
I thought I was the only one! I just wet my face with warm water, then lather. I think the real question is, since lather is made of soap, is it really possible to leave the oil on?Quote:

Years ago I read wet shaving articles that said to wash and exfoliate before shaving for best results. That worked very well for me. However, these last couple of years I've skipped exfoliating and stuck with just washing before a shave. Regular bar soap works OK, but I like using Dr Bronner's liquid soaps.
(I haven't tried it yet, but I've read good reviews about Musgo Real's glycerin soap (see Tarkus' post above)).

I don't wash my face with soap, before shaving; instead, I soak it (as best I can) in/with hot water. And then, I face lather, rub it into my beard, leave on and re-lather, and shave. Lather-rinse-repeat for second and third passes.Quote:
