Who makes a good quality scuttle that isn't outrageously priced?
Jake,
"Outrageously priced" according to whose definition? Scuttles come in various designs and at various prices. Only you can decide what design and price are right for you.
Here are some scuttle brands I have used: Moss, Schwarzweiskeramik, Dirty Bird, Georgetown, Becker and SRD. Check them out and make your selection.
I'm not wanting to spend anything over $40. I figure if they all run that high or higher, I can continue to float my bowl in a sink full of hot water as I have been.
Just wanted to see what the difference was for myself.
I'll look into the names you gave. Thank you sir.
Jake,
In most cases, the shipping adds considerably to the price, especially coming from overseas. Your best bet would be to do the research and find something within your price range. Also, sometimes the classified section of various forums will list used scuttles for sale.
I have one Schwarzweiskeramik and works beautiful, but the price is way higher than $40,00.
Look at Etsy.com and search for scuttles...here's a linkhttps://www.etsy.com/search?q=shavin...ttle&ref=auto3
Etsy has some nice ones but most hold around 8 to 12 oz of hot water.
My votes are for Georgetown and moss. You'll pay a bit more for the moss, not much more for Georgetown and both are great.
I've been looking a lot in the ole interweb. Can I make a super lather in it? I put out the vibe to the better half, maybe Santa will be nice this year ;)
Google "Georgetown Pottery Scuttle G12 Seconds" and you may find something you like.
Their scuttles work well and while technically "seconds" you will have to look hard to find the flaw; they work the same and at $30 (plus $11 CONUS shipping) fit your budget.
Good luck.

The Georgetown G20 is a little more, but boy are they worth it. There's a major difference between shaving with a little cheapy, metal bowl vs a nice, hot scuttle. I love having warm lather for additional passes.

G20 (20 oz water capacity) may be a bit big for most brushes.
Slightly smaller, the G12 (12 oz water capacity - you may have guessed it 😉 ) seems to work well with most brushes.

When I purchased a scuttle I bought a couple and a family member ended up with the one I did not keep. I chose the Dirty Bird and the reasons are listed in my post in http://straightrazorpalace.com/misce...ping-warm.html. I have not tried the "floating bowl" deal so I do not know what, if any, aggravation factor comes into play. That said ....... scuttles rock!
Another option is a cheap home made scuttle. Do a search and you will find many ideas. They keep your lather warm and won't break the bank.
There certainly is nothing wrong with being frugal, but if a scuttle "breaks the bank" you may want to take up a different hobby. Just sayin' ;)
I have a really nice Dirty Bird scuttle, but switched to cold water shaving and face lathering, so it doesn't get much use. If you want to skip the scuttle idea altogether, search on cold water shaving and face lathering and try them out those techniques. I'm sure you already have cold water and a face ;)
Do a Bing or Goggle search for Robert Becker: I own two of his scuttles a X-large and small. The best of both worlds. His prices are usually the best around.
I just visited Robert's website. He has serious health issues an is currently not producing scuttles.
A scuttle is one of those things you can jury rig something together and it gets the job done and you think, why would I ever need an actual scuttle. Then you acquire one and then you wonder how you ever managed without it.
I have used the VDH small bowl, picked up a shallow wider bowl and a plastic salsa dish. The bowl floating idea was to fill the bigger shallow bowl with steaming hot water and place the salsa dish in it to keep the lather warm for multiple passes. I've seen a few of the scuttles and like the idea of having it all in one. Its not that buying a scuttle will break the bank, but if I don't like it, I don't want to dump a lot of money into it. I have picked up a little brush soaker and a giant coffee mug today too. Pics to come.
I am with Beluga. The Georgetown Pottery G12 is the way to go, and if saving a little is also on the menu... a G12 "Second".
I love mine (though its not a second)... use it for every shave!

I have done this too for a while, but where these improvisations invariably fell short was at the base of the bowl.
Good scuttles have a profile at their base that helps the brush soak up the blobs of cream you put there - even if you should face-lather after that.
This would obviously not apply if you put creams straight onto your face, or for soaps.
The other one is heat retention.
Most improvisations fall short in that area, as too much water makes the scuttle too heavy, too little makes the scuttle cool too quick.
Lastly, the handle: some large coffee mugs are not too bad, but many other improvisations don't work well ergonomically and I don't like broken ceramic on the bathroom floor.
I experimented for quite some time and for the money I spend on various mugs, bowls, cups and other contraptions that I thought worth trying, I could have bought a proper scuttle a few times over.
Of course, if it doesn't have to be a scuttle that contains a water mantle to keep the brush warm, many large (e.g. cappuccino) mugs that open wide at the top hold a shaving brush quite nicely.
Hope this helps....

A couple of years ago when I thought I would like to try a scuttle I ordered a Robert Becker one. It worked very well and am sorry to see from the post that he has health issues. He was quite good to deal with and communications were very personable. I wish him a full and speedy recovery back to good health.
I did try various different ways to get and keep my lather hot before ordering a scuttle. There really is no substitute for a good scuttle for the purpose of making and keeping your lather warm.

Ok , I thought outside the box. I use a Vintage Gravy Boat. Yes thats right straight from grandmas good china set. Ebay $8-12 . It kept the gravy warm for dinner. Why not lather. Pictures to follow.
Pictures might help.

I fill boat with hot water, add brush, shower, post shower, pour out water, load brush and shave .Porcelain stays warm for 15 minutes.
Gold leaf and fine china attached to underplate for easy handling .Elegant functional and re purposed for under $20 PRICELESS.
Best use for gravy boats I've seen. Shaving lather doesn't put the weight on you like gravy does.
i like that idea ultrasoundguy. 👍 another idea is to find a local potter crafter.salute.
I agree a local potter helps me to buy local. I did order a G20 to see what its about. I must tell you ,there is something elegant and rich to use fine china . The goldleaf an the sturdy yet delicate hand feel of porcelain.
A side note the gravy boat in the picture is labeled made in Occupied Japan that would make it 60 years old. For $8 I couldnt pass it up. SWMBO likes it better than a big mug. If she aint happy no one is.
The best part is it freaks houseguests out to see a gravy boat in the bathroom.
I have also been interested in getting a scuttle. The gravy boat idea also looks cool, and for much cheaper. Lately I've found a lot on Etsy but I think I may go with a more recognized brand.
As of now I have a few bowls/mugs I've used, but my most recent goto is a stainless steel brush bowl. I fill the sink with steaming hot water and plug the drain, then just let my bowl float around in there while I shave :) I currently use an Edwin Jagger Silvertip brush
What, if any, improvement would I see using a professional scuttle over my current method? Just easier to use? I am still extremely new and trying to soak up as much info as I can.
Ya know I just spent $72 on a G20 scuttle. Its cool ,but not $72 cool. The gravy boat is elegant. New scuttle is a Sherman Tank. I see alot of $50 razors I would rather have than a new fangled scuttle. depends on your money... Just me ,but I would rather use fine porcelain, gold leaf and elegance is cool. But is see it both ways
Face lather,no scuttle needed:)
I use a coffee Mug and fill it with hot water from our Keurig coffee maker. I drop brush into mug B/4 showering and it works by me. Coffee mug cost $6.99.
Don't know where you are on the scuttle quest, but I've been using a two piece self watering flower pot for most of three years now. I'll fill both half full, nuke for few mins then soaks brush and shave. Lately I put a small had towel around it to allow better heat retention.5-6-7$.
Gents:
In my particular case I use the moss scuttle from Sara Bonniman. The texan version. Awesome Scuttle.

Thanks

Man, Georgetown Pottery (maker of the G20) is awesome... I just realized that everyone else has that plug for the snout - I didn't get one. Called them up - shipping it to me for free. Great company, great people, and local and American made.
