If it's Georgetown, I just called them today because I too didn't get a plug. They're sending one free of charge.
Depends on the size of the opening. I forget to use the plug on my G20 and it stays warm. Some might get colder faster but I don't see the plug as necessary. schwarzweisskeramik scuttles have giant holes for dipping a brush and I hear (wish I had one) they are great
I have one schwarzweisskeramik and no problem to do three passes.
I have a Robert Becker scuttle and they do not come with a plug. The opening is not made for one anyway. I cover my scuttle with a towel and the water stays hot for 4 passes easily
Not every scuttle has a plug.
I suggest to check the website of the manufacturer of your scuttle to see whether yours should have come with one.
Heat loss would not concern me too much, considering the by comparison much larger ceramic surface of the scuttle. How fast a scuttle cools is primarily a function of scuttle surface, water volume and - of course - water temperature.
Whether the small spout is plugged or not is of minor importance here.
Where it matters more is when you handle the scuttle and move it around.
A scuttle with plug you can fill to the brim; on scuttles without plug you need to be more careful or you have water slushing out of the spout.
Hope this helps...

I have a DB and a Georgetown. I never use the GT plug.
