Homemade pre-shave
I was reading on a number of forums about people who make their own pre-shave treatment. I decided that it was worth the effort and read what was being used in most of the products. I went to Walmart and picked up organic coconut oil, castor oil and glycerin. I mixed 3 parts coconut, 1 part castor and 1/2 part glycerin and mixed well. I then put a walnut sized glob on my hand, rubbed my hands together and applied to a wet face. I then used my favorite creme. Low and behold the pre-shave worked great. Got 3 passes and no irritation. Total cost to mix a quart about $8. That's right, a quart. I was told I could have used virgin olive oil but I found the coconut oil had a nice scent, was lighter and it washed off with warm water. No residue on the badger brush.

I am just about out of AOS preshave and was thinking what I would pick up next. Wife was saying earlier she wants me to try a lavender type scent. Wonder if I could somehow take your recipe and substitute it for the coconut. Or....get the coconut and make 2 batches. Sounds like it smelled awesome.

I would try the mix without the glycerin at first. The coconut oil smells good and the castor oil adds slickness. Try 4 or 5 parts coconut oil to 1 part castor oil. The coconut oil is the most important part. If it isn't slick enough, you can add more castor oil. The smell is not overpowering. I like it that way because the shaving creme or soap should have the smell.

Straight Olive Oil works quite nicely as well. It leaves the skin in good condition.
I like coconut oil as well

Whipped up a batch of pre shave last night and used it today. Much better than the AOS stuff I have used. A little more liquid but was a fantastic shave. Probably the best shave I have had since returning to the Straight.
2 parts coconut oil
1 part jojoba oil
6 drops of lavender essential oil
We got everything at Trader Joes and was not expensive at all. Thanks for spurring me on. I have enough ingredients to make maybe 8 or 9 batches I guess. And saved a ton of money. I will use the bottle from the AOS to hold it tho. Have to get a few more bottles too. Maybe little classy or fancy ones.
Just wanted to let you all know. Happy and safe holiday to all the Americans following.
