I got mine from Here
the one piece double wall scuttle, only mine is the bigger version which is not listed right now.
I have a Dirty Bird also, great piece.
I have a few, Georgetown Pottery G5, And The Dirty Bird, Large..I recommend the Dirtybird, its larger, holds more water....heat retention about the same...
I have the schwarzweisskeramik. (probably not the correct spelling) Alittle expensive but I say it is worth it. A fantastic piece of craftmanship from Germany.
just wondering..were the old fashioned soap scuttles from "yesteryear" 40+ years ago better or the same in every area of lather as lets say...SRD scuttles or Dirty Bird scuttles.?

The old type scuttles were a totally different animal than the new ones. These new breeds are really designed to keep the brush and lather warm while the old ones were used to make the lather and keep the lather warm and the brush too. The design is very different.
There are a lot of different ones available, and they are designed to do different things. Some are designed to lather in and keep that lather warm, some are to lather in and hold more hot water to dip your bristles in, some are just to keep the brush warm. Of all the ones I have had a chance to actually try out (5 or 6 different ones from different makers), my favorite for MY usage is the SRD. It's a brush scuttle (not intended to create lather in it; if you want to lather in your scuttle it's not for you) and has the best heat retention I've seen.
The old ones were DIFFERENT - they were designed for a different purpose. Back before running hot water, you needed something to hold hot water while you shaved, and these scuttles did that; a place to put your soap puck a place to hold hot water and, for the most part, nowhere to actually make lather. Most modern ones seem designed to create and heat lather OR to keep your brush warm. Asking what is better is like asking "which is better, a shotgun or a pistol?"
This is the old-time scuttle that was discussed in another post: http://thumbs3.ebaystatic.com/m/mo21...Wq5bQnw/96.jpg. The reservoir opening on the side is large enough to warm the brush and the top has three holes underneath to swirl the brush and warm the lather. In the days before running water, boiling water was placed in the reservoir to allow for a warm shave. I have never used one of these but I would suspect that they don't work as well as the newer ones.
The Schwarzweisskeramik discussed (see reviews) in another post is also my post happens to be my go-to scuttle as well (I have the small) because it has a place to dip the brush.
The Dirty Bird (see reviews) probably wins the popularity contest from what I can tell from reading shaving forums and it's a wonderful piece of work.
Thanks every body. I used the search box:idea: and found interested in the dirty bird scuttle. Does any one have pics of the webbed like lathering ridges? I'm curious to see what that looks like.
That doesn't make it a a better weapon, though, it's just your choice based on your preferences and the scenarios you envision facing. I'm sure someone who actually knows about guns could come up with a situation in which a pistol is undeniably better or a person for whom a pistol would undeniably be a better choice.
The same is true with scuttles. If you take longer shaves and face lather, a brush scuttle is the better choice because it has better heat retention (much less surface area) and better contact with the brush. If you want a bowl to lather in and take quicker shaves, the heat loss of a big bowl scuttle won't really matter and the lather area will be more important.
Avast holli4pirating. Are ye ready for talk like a pirate day on the 19th? uh?....well neither am I. But I will be, just like I'll be ready for any scallywags that breech my front rail with my pistol...er/or....revolver. My shotguns will work just fine of course, it's just easier for me to use the handgun. It is also my choice to use a pestle (of motar and pestle fame) to hold my shaving soap. I fill it with hot water and leave it while I brush my teeth. By the time I am done rinsing the pearly whites, and the partials, :) ,the granite is nice and warm. With a hot brush I can now get a good, warm lather going and shave. I have a full beard so it is a little faster for me, but I shave everyday. I have seen the old and new versions of the scuttles and I bet they work great. For me I keep it simple.
Dirty Bird every time... the vendor is lovely to deal with and custom designed mine with grooves for ease of lathering. Can't recommend her enough. Nuff said.
I only have one, you can see it here: http://straightrazorpalace.com/misce...-scuttles.html . It is not for sale, it was made to my specs by a friend. However, I am no scuttle designer... I rarely ever use it because I am fond of facelathering. I think that it works well considering its size. That is one thing I do not like about most lathering scuttles: they are rather small. Perhaps it will see more use now in the coming months as the cold weather approaches but I think that a a scuttle that allows me to keep the brush warm would be more appropriate for what need. I figure that I would give you my take on scuttles.
Al raz.
Here is a picture of my DirtyBird 1.5 scuttle with the web design. You can also see in the picture where I had Julie put a "dribble port" in the side so that I can tilt the scuttle away from myself to add a bit of water to my lather...

you might find a scuttle at the local antique store, but if your not looking for anything fancy you could always use an old coffiee mug they work pretty nice.
that dribble port thing looks awesome.. good idea.. i only have a gardening scuttle.. but i hardly use it.. i'm more into the facelathering.
I use this type of shaving mug pretty much every day it's designed for face lather. warm the brush in the wide spout and warm the soap at the same time. I normaly fill it before it take a bath or shower I also make sure the soap is also wetted a bit as well. I still use it to make a warm lather in a muhle bowl which I sit in an old enamel cup filled with hot water this heats up the lather and the brush so every pass gets warmer.
I like the old shave mug its something my late father used to use it's a nice connection to have.
Evin,
I was looking at the scuttles and im a little confused on where your brush goes, in the top or the side?
Hi Andrevs20 your not the first person I have come across who has been uncertain about how to use a shaving mug. They say a picture is worth a 1000 words so just for you.

The Brush goes in the big spout where the hot water is to warm the brush and the soap, you load the brush with soap and face lather or if you like it a bit warmer I have my bowl and cup which it placed in the sink while filling with hot water and the cup would be filled with hot water. The bowl sits on top and every thing gets warm.
I hope that clears it up for you:)
Evin, In the scuttle on the right, would the brush be sitting in warm water when its like that?
Yes the brush would be sitting in the warm water before use and then dipped in as required during use this would be when you would be face lathering. I mostly bowl lather and just use it to warm up the brush before making a lather. Also I do not store my brushes in the mug but put them on brush stands to dry out.
Speaking of dirty bird scuttles, I bought a green brush scuttle off of a forum member. I'm really enjoying it. They say it's for those who like to face lather, and that is true, but it works for people who bowl lather as well. That's because even after I bowl lather, I apply the soap or cream and begin the first pass. The brush rests in the brush scuttle and stays warm before my second and third pass lathers. It does create an extra piece of pottery to wash out and adds an element to the process but having warm soap and brush throughout the shave is well worth the trouble.
Has anyone tried the Truefitt & Hill scuttles? They are pricey, no doubt, but they do look damned fine! Truefitt & Hill - Mugs
Would those be considered an old style scuttle or a new style?
So I received a DB scuttle the other week, it was the larger size, I belive it is th3 1.5. an i am really enjoying the warm lather. But I found if i just fill her up with water, my lather is cold by the end of my shave. So during my pre shave, I'm submerging my scuttle it hot water to make the whole piece hot. And its been working out pretty nicely for me.
Here's what I do, I pre heat my DB scuttle with hot tap water, then microwave 2 cups of water, cold for 2 mins...during that time, I do my pre shave stuff, When the water's done, I dump out the scuttle, and add the micro water. I find it stay's nice and warm throughout my shave.
