I have used shave secret and although I liked it I found it a bit thin. I have been using oil from the art of shaving and I like how thick it is and was wondering if anyone had tried this oil and had another recommendatio? I am making an order from srd and if they have something comparable I would love to try it.

I have tried the oil from AOS, because it came free with a large purchase from them. It was o.k. I guess, but too thick for me and I have a problem with oily skin as well. So I tried several pre-shave items and quickly settled with this product; it is none oily, light, a little goes a long way and the difference between applying it and not applying it before a shave is night and day. It really softens the hairs. It washes out easily and has no scent that conflicts with my witch hazel or aftershave.

I use oo and vitamin oil a little witch hazel and some orange essential oil. Works great.
I purchased a bottle from the AOS - sandalwood essential oil, to be exact. I personally love the feel and fragrance.
I use hair conditioner and work it into my beard for at least a min and it works great i know its not an oil of any such but it gets the job done
I tried quite a few different things. Olive oil, which is OK but not great. AOS Pre-shave oil which I like the smell but little else. Nozema, better than the above, still not great. Hair conditioner, shaving goop in a can, and a couple others I think. But finally settled on Proraso pre-post creme. This stuff is like manna from heaven, it makes a huge difference in shave comfort and closeness and as a bonus you can use it post shave in the summer and menthol heaven!
Coconut oil works pretty well and is really cheap (for a shaving application). I have heard great things however about the Proraso. I am going to try that next, and they even have an extra sensitive variety for guys with faces like mine.Quote:

I have gone through a long list of pre-shave products. The oils I avoid. Most are greasy and make things slippery. I prefer Castle Forbes. Yes, it is a tad pricey, but I use it with each shave and think highly of it. On the other hand, I am still not convinced one needs a pre-shave product if one follows a standard proper preparation.
I have been going back and forth between udderly smooth and AoS lavender pre-shave. Then I put some lather over that and go to stropping my razor.
Do you start with pre shave or put it on before each pass?

I apply pre-shave only once at the beginning and then lather over it. For subsequent lathering before each pass I don't find pre-shave necessary. Only once before lathering at the start is enough.
That's what I have done but the pre shave before each pass didn't even dawn on me until I was reading this thread.

I use good old fashioned Noxzema in the blue tub. Inexpensive, lasts a long time and is basically the same as the Prorasso pre/post.
