Pictures? ?
Is this a new product or an old one? How big is it?
a crockpot can be used also, but hot towels are the best for shaving. I use several of them when I shave.
Brand,,,Photos,,,,???? :w
.....................
Eat it slow, Tom, eat it slow.
Anyone used this http://www.beauty-pro.co.uk/Hot_Towe...m?1=1&CartID=0? Found it while browsing the Internet, bored.... Tells you the extent of my obsession. Sad, I know.....
Tried a hot towel once for 15 minutes, saw no difference, dropped it.
[QUOTE=Hirlau;1033762]I try not to drop the towel, Ace.:gaah:
Depending on where you drop it, real problems can occur.[/QUOTEDo
Do you think it had anything to do with my dropping it in the kitty litter?
Just try not to "throw in the towel"! ;)
Shave right out of the shower, same results. I did the hot towel thing for a while, but even with the microwave it is a cumbersome thing. It is nice though if you can have a barber do it. Very relaxing.
+1
I used to really push the hot towel idea (and I am not about to tell anyone NOT to do it, but....)
It was nice, but it bumped my time up along with my laundry volume, and it is not really missed that much.
All I ever did was run hot water into a towel and wring it out. Any hotter than that would have burnt me.
And, in fairness, if I shave in the evening after a soak in the tub (which is also relaxing), I will probably still use a hot towel...but I do not have space in my house for any more appliances;)
Yes, if you have the good water heater, that is sufficient. I use the same hand towel size for 3 shaves or so, rinsing well and hanging to dry between shaves. With a house full of women, the towel volume is tremendous!
With a house full of women everything is tremendous. Not enough bathrooms in the world! I raised 5 girls and their mother. The kids have come out fine.
Yeah, and sometimes, more often than not, hot water is scarce! :banghead:
Fun thread, I would like to throw in my two cents.
Seems like a rice cooker should accomplish the same goal of steaming towels as the specialty items that folks linked to for cheaper. Looks like they are basically the same thing. Anybody ever try it?
I currently just use hot tap water for my towels. It works, but its always to good to consider ways to improve.
I tried using a hot towel when I first started, barber in my town told me to put on lather and then a hot towel. Then lather and shave. I just shower and shave, leave lather on for 5 minutes and the hair had the same effect. Wish I could find a barber to go to over here, every shop I go to they refuse to do straight shaves but give me plenty of advice and a tip of the hat when I say I do it myself.
I like to do a hot towel shave every blue moon. Doesn't do much for the shave itself, but it does feel pretty darn good to the face. I think that's one of the subconscious reasons for switching to DE's and straights...no more mystery hairs in my razors :argue:
It was rumored that Rip Van Winkle was clean shaved, when he began his wait for the towel warmer to appear.

I'm hungry again............................
It could be a while before the OP gets back with the photos, make or model of that towel warmer.
So I thought that I would go get us some snacks while we wait, Tom.

Yeah! I mean, I really AM interested in a 70 buck MINI that does 12 towels! Sounds good?
Let's munch out, Hirlau!!......
I don't generally have time for the hot towel treatment, but when the mood does strike, I just run plain tap water through the coffee maker (sans grinds of course) and pour the water into a stopped sink or large bowl containing the towel. Usually by the time I get the bathroom locked down to myself and a good lather built, the water has cooled enough to grab, wring, and apply the towel.
Try it with the grinds sometime, who knows, maybe a good preshave as well as aftershave combo! Let us know how it pans out.
Hey Tom,
I've got a bag of Doritos Cool Ranch right now.... want some??
I'm waiting for my stones to soak, rescued a W. Greaves & Son from an antique store today. Just finished cleaning her. Will set a bevel & hone in about 15 minutes. Will shave with her tomorrow & put her in a thread tomorrow.
Still no sign of the towel warmer ???
I have been using a hot towel before I start shaving, after my shower. I use Stephen Stay Smooth Cream (awesome stuff) at the end of my shower. Keep it in a few minutes, while I strop. Then I'll grab the hand towel and zap it for 30 seconds. Just under the limit where its too hot to hold. After I use the towel, I'll put on some AOS preshave oil/gel while I make my lather.
It sounds like a lot but I only shave once a week or every 5 days. And my beard is very full and pretty coarse. So I need a thorough prep.
Am I going overboard? :p
Me too - have always used a hot towel before my shave for as long as I can remember whilst using a straight.
Got a few flannels cheaply from a super market. I soak them in hot water just after I load my face with hot water, ring it, then put it across my face.
Afterwards I use it to gently wipe the (used) foam and shaved beard hairs on to it from my razor. Of course my razor doesn't touch the wet flannel, but if it does, I immediately dry it with a towel I have nearby.
The flannel then goes in the wash along with the kitchen towels and so on.
I am trying to understand face prep. prior to my straight razors and gear arriving, so today I practiced because I had time. I used a hot towel for the first time and it was thoroughly enjoyable. I washed my face with very light soap rinsed applied my canned Nivea for Men Sensitive Shaving Gel and then applied a hot towel, heated from the tap. I left it on for approximately one minute and then refreshed towel left for another minute, then I refreshed it again for a total of three one minute applications. Then I reapplied my shave gel and shaved with my Mach 3 and got one of the better shaves that I have had for a while. I enjoyed it and will probably use the hot towel method when I get my straight razors only because I shower at night and shave in the morning. Now I am looking forward to post shave care, the only AS available here are Brut, Aqua Velva, Skin Bracer, and a generic Exchange brand comparable to AV. They also have Nivea Post Shave Balm Sensitive I have used that before, but I have never used AS. Lets keep this to pre shave hot towels though I will go post in the correct threads for post shave stuff now.
Sorry once again to deviate from forum tradition here, but I have experimented with hot towel applications and never found a result from them. All I do these days is splash my face five times with hot water, lather quickly and shave. If I thought the hot towel made a difference, I would certainly do it, but I just didn't. On the other hand, if you like doing it just for the sake of it, that's fine. I like to get my shaves completed in five minutes, so additional stuff that doesn't seem to make a difference doesn't have much attraction for me.
I like the hot towel, softens my whiskers and feels good. It's become a habit and part of my normal routine. If I think to myself that I need a fast shave and feel the need to rush through my shave, I skip shaving because I don't want to be a contributor to the "Cut of the Day" thread :)
I soak the bar towel in water, put it in the microwave , on a plate, for 70 seconds; squeeze out the excess hot water, then use it to remove any excess lather & pre shave treatment, then comes the alum heavy.
I don't need the hot towel before the shave, but after the last razor pass, it sure feels great on the face , cleaning it.
