Truthfully, it's a little small, but it's the size I use, and the size I like. I want to be sure I understand what you're asking here, however.
My scuttle is about that size but I use it as a brush scuttle, that is, I use it to keep my brush warm as I shave. I would not use my scuttle to store soap in.
My soap bowls are also about that size, again by preference. I use the soap bowls to load soap on my brush prior to face lathering.
I hope this is clear. If not please ask!
Ah ok I didnt know that you dont store soap in there. Do you shave a little soap of to use in the scuttle bowl? How does it work? I assume you lather your soap in there because the scuttle bowl has ridges. But I might be wrong. Im just shopping and doing research for my husband :)
Glad to help!
There are two ways to use a scuttle, one is how I do it, load the brush on a puck of soap, then make lather directly on my face, then use my warm scuttle to store my brush for subsequent passes and more warmed lather.
The other way I think is more common, judging by the size of the most commonly bought scuttles. You would load your brush up on a puck of soap then use your brush in the scuttle to whip up lather. This accounts for the ridges on the inside of the scuttle. Since the scuttle is warmed by warm water, the lather you make would be nice and warm. The warmed lather is then applied to your face. A scuttle used this way has to be larger since you are building lather in it.
So I have a bowl just for soap, which I use for loading up the brush.
Hope this helps.
I just received this, used it a week now, besides a work art, man this one keeps the foam and brush piping warm. Very happy with it and is large easy basin to make mounds of foam.Attachment 114154
I melt a small soap puck to the bottom of my scuttle. That way, all I have to do is put hot water in the scuttle and wet the brush, and I only need the scuttle, not an additional bowl for the soap. The only problem with this is that if you like using different soaps all the time, you can't. But I just use up the soap at the bottom then melt another puck in there when I need it.
Ive heard you won't get the best lather from using a scuttle with MWF. I haven't used one to lather it but I can get a good lather with MWF either using my palm or lathering directly on my face.
I can get a great lather with mwf in a bowl scuttle and palm and face just got to keep swirling
MWF? This is new to me whats it mean
MWF= Mitchell's Wool Fat
I have used MWF in mine and the first time it was too hot, I adjust to a lower heat when using MWF, this eliminated the drying out..It and Cabela has to be kept cooler..that's my experience and solution....I know you say ,why bother, but I truly love that warm foam and warm brush experience..
I received one in May and absolutely LOVE it!!! It's a bit pricey, but I use it everyday. My Georgetown G5 (also an excellent scuttle) has been "down graded" to "travel scuttle" status. Yours looks great.

Thank you ShavingSrgn and that's a handsome scuttle too. Ansgar gives great workmanship and very helpful. I am still learning different soaps take more less water with the warmth factor..MWF is vey temperamental for example.
I LOVE my MWF. Unfortunately, I've develped a terrible case of SAD and don't use it as often as I would like (I rotate my soaps and seem to use my latest acquisitions the most often). My hot water heater is set fairly low so I've never really had a problem with "The Fat." The only soap that I've had trouble with is my Mystic Water. I really like the soap (I have two of their scents) but I have found that it doesn't seem to like heat at all. The lather breaks down rather quickly in the scuttle so I have to use warm, not hot water on Mystic Water days. I would eventually like to try a Dirty Bird, Becker, Georgetown G20, etc. (if anyone has a scuttle that needs a good home I'm currently helping unwanted scuttles find a good home). I know there's a number of much less expensive ways of creating warm lather, but I love the artistry and convinience of a scuttle.

I use a Becker 004 scuttle, very nice. and affordable also. I use a soap dish to load up my brush and then whip up the lather with the pre heated scuttle. The ridges work very nicely to make quick work of making mounds of lather. Stay's very warm for a long time and feels great!! I think it adds something classy to the lu when on the side shelf, real 'perty piece of pottery.

My scuttle is slightly larger but whatever works.
Well, in my particular case I used to have a Texan Moss Scuttle. I loved, one day my kid was play around me while I was shaving. The story im 100% positive you know how the scuttle ends. After that I purchased a G20 nothing bad with it but, no way too small for me. After that I purchased a 1.5 DB real nice but 3 things.
1) The mouth was too big that helps turns the water more cold faster.
2) The inner bowl the cone construction turns the lather down or to the lower section and when lathers sometimes helps create a small mess of lather because it falls out the scuttle.
3) The handle construction is curved down. I always lathers the poison and put into rest the brush in top of the handle. In other words I don't leave the brush in the inner bowl due to the fact could create damage to the tips.
Right now I sold both of them and I purchased a Moss back again. In that sense as soon as I received I will take pictures and I will put them here.
Have fun shaving.

I have a large abalone shell that I use as a lather bowel that I use sometimes. It looks cool and it fit in my palm perfect with a sloping bottom thats easy to add water to. works great
Well never have used a scuttle but found a good vid showing how this guy uses it. I guess I'm just to lazy. I warm up the faucet water, soak my brush and load it up with the soap in my cup. How to use a Shaving Scuttle - YouTube
