Fragrance vs. Body Spray

I don't know about the population of SRP, but in general body sprays are quite popular. In contrast the number of people who use perfume is rather small.

For most it's a question of value, but comparing body spray to an EDT is rather like comparing cartridge razors to a straight razor. Consider that the average fragrance bottle of 3.4 ounces (100mls) provides around 12 sprays per ml, or 1,200 sprays per bottle. At four sprays a day, in other words, the bottle will last close to a year. How much is a years supply of body spray? A single bottle of perfume (of comparable quality to most body sprays) can be purchased for as little as 10-15 USD. Some very good scents, far exceeding the quality of any body spray, can be purchased for less than 50 USD per bottle. You could well use as little as one or two sprays of your fragrance a day though whether as a matter of preference or because it is very long-lasting and strong. Cost does not really factor into this as there are strong, long-lasting scents in all price ranges.

Now in my experience most body sprays only last a few hours. This is low-end longevity for an EDT - some last for days - and even many colognes so in other words in the simple, quantifiable test of longevity the average perfume offers a superior product. A superior product that can be purchased for a comparable, or much lower price in other words.

So an EDT lasts longer, and can be cheaper in the long-run. On a more subjective level I personally find most body sprays offer very poor quality fragrances. This isn't simply me poo-pooing these brands nor is it a question of elitism. If you want to examine it for yourself find a fragrance which has a companion deodorant spray or similar products: some of these are very expensive indeed. They are almost all dismal quality in contrast to the EDT.

I think it would be a non antipersperant deodorant aerosol spray. I.e. a spray on scent rather than something which actively prevents you from sweating.

Thank goodness I got him into wet shaving and all that stopped.

I wear EDT's and EDP's,
and of course some great aftershaves as well.
I have found a bottle of the scents I like to last long enough to be worth the initial purchase price.

But again this is a YMMV topic :shrug:

Eau de toilette. Sort of like cologne but with either more or less fragrance I can't remember which, I think it is more.

In order of there strength / concentration of oils

EDC= eau du de cologne 3-8% (typical ~5%)
EDT= eau de toilette 5-15% (typical ~10%)
EDP= eau de parfum 10-20% (typical ~15%)
ESDP= Esprit de Parfum 15-30% (not seen often)
Parfum=15-40% (typical 20%)

I should note the concentration allows one to use less and longevity increases.

What is the difference between body spray and deodorant spray, not anti perspirant deodorant spray. I know earlier I said that I thought they were the same but now I don't know.
Cologne wouldn't stop body odour unless you out it on your pits, I have seen a brut deodorant splash, smells like brut but is half the price. I have just used brut as an anti BO tool, and it works well even when I am,drenched in sweat from crawling round in roof spaces all day.

Back before the big scented body sprays there were spray deodorants,
then they started to scent them to be more olfactory pleasing, (this is debatable)
now there are body sprays (cheap spray cologne), deodorant sprays, and some all over after shower body/deodorant sprays.
I would presume a deodorant/body spray would have something in it to neutralize odors and inhibit bacterial growth but I have not got a clue.

TMK body sprays are basically dual purpose, both deodorant and cologne. These days they are often used, mainly abused. :rofl2:

Maybe designer fragrances are only for desperate adult men who don't have the sense to buy niche, and maybe niche fragrances are only for desperate adult men who don't have the sense to buy vintage, and vintage for those who don't have the sense to buy bespoke. I'd rather not make value judgments like that though. Besides I'm more inclined to think that most people use body spray because it's heavily advertised and widely available. It seems 'normal,' and the fragrances which are as widely advertised and inexpensive often have just as bad a reputation. Beyond that most people don't even know where to begin with perfume.

Hell in my opinion until they've spent at least a year or two sampling and fooling around, learning to listen to and use their nose, the average person will find so many scents more or less smell the same. Or are merely a kind of indefinable blob of smells.

I'm in the same position. I usually have a fairly large rotation, anything from 15-30 scents. I've been collecting for over two decades so at this point I can buy any scent, and no matter the cost I know it's going to last for many, many years.

These numbers are a reasonable gauge, but many EDCs are more concentrated than many EDTs, while many PDTs or EDPs are more concentrated than parfum. Moreover concentration is not always a good indication of longevity or projection. It's also worth keeping in mind that the different concentrations of the same scent are often also different versions of the same scent.

This is a debatable subject which I've seen argued many times in many ways. I'll just say that for my part if I'm not going to be doing any strenuous exercise I find a few sprays of fragrance works just fine. On a hot day I might use some roll-on. It depends on what I'm wearing. Consider that Civet was used as a deodorant at one time not because it stopped you sweating but because its scent would make your scent more palatable. There are many fragrances which can work very well in this capacity.

Still everyone has a different BO and sweats more or less; each individual is in the best position to decide for themselves what works or doesn't.

I should also note that when I say body spray I want to encompass all spray-on scents whether deodorant or not. For that matter I'd also like to include body creams, shower gels, soaps, and all that. As I said earlier a good objective test of the quality of these non-traditional fragrances is to seek out a scent with an accompanying line of body care products. Test the scent itself and then test the fragrance of the shower gel, deodorant, etc. You'll find it will be totally lacking in complexity and depth in contrast to the real thing.

Great post in #16. Somehow I just can't imagine or foresee myself ever keeping a Civet in my medicine cabinet no matter how nice he smelt. Luckily for me SWMBO does like the scent of Aqua Velva Ice Blue or Old Spice after shaves. She is also not averse to the other scents I also have in the cabinet but they aee to confuse her when I wear them. Much like where is the real Bob and what have you done with him sorta thing. I don't like seeing her in that state.

Hah! Yes I imagine it wouldn't be impressed about being kept in the medicine cupboard either. Civet in this context though is short-hand for civet oil which is a secretion from the anal scent glands of said mammal. Although genuine civet only exist in the context of vintage scents as animalics like this have largely been replaced by synthetics. I believe the export of civet oil is in fact illegal now. The scent is civet, in its pure form, has definite fecal facets. It reminds some of urine, or acrid body-odor. In my experience the synthetics are more shrill, acrid and urineous while the genuine oil is (I can't believe I'm about to use this term) more fecal-floral.

This sound horrible, but when well blended civet can be amazing. The vintage Givenchy Gentleman is quite civet-heavy and is one of my all-time favorite masculine scents. A decent modern copy is Bond no.9's H.O.T Always (though I prefer the Givenchy reformulation; it's not as natural but the blend is smoother) and another great scent of a similar sort is Giorgio of Beverly Hills' Giorgio For Men which I believe has recently been discontinued but can be grabbed for very cheap.

Using body spray is neither "frugal" nor "thrifty"; it is merely "cheap". Like a BIC disposable, it has its place... far away from one's face or neck... and uses. For the rest of us, the world of EDC, EDT, and EDP is our oyster (albeit, an expensive one... what's genuinely good, generally is). Here's mine:

For your second point that's pretty much my experience as well. If a person finds someone attractive or is romantic with them they're generally going to prefer the way they smell naturally to any cologne. There can be some overlap though. Even if you're wearing perfume your natural scent should be discernible in accord with the fragrance. That said I wouldn't recommend wearing fragrances in an effort to be more attractive. For my part I wear what I enjoy smelling, and I think being happy and at ease with myself, feeling confident, is a greater benefit in social terms than striving to smell attractive to others.

An impressive collection! Expensive though is something I would argue with. It's true you can spend a lot of money on many wonderful fragrances (as your collection proves) but there are also many very excellent scents that are quite inexpensive. It's worth bearing in mind always that the prices are less a reflection of the quality of ingredients, of the expenses of manufacture and more of their perceived quality, the desirability of their brand-associations, and their (real or imagined) exclusivity. In the world of luxury goods prices are based on what people will pay, in other words, not what the product is worth. Though it's true there is a threshold as it were, a certain price bracket above which we find many excellent, high-quality products, and below which we find many dismal products there is a great deal of overlap. I'm not saying no one should spend a lot of money on fragrances. There are many reasons to buy expensive niche or designer exclusives, or vintage fragrances for that matter, but that's a different matter entirely given that vintage scents may have ingredients which no longer exist. However I do maintain that you do not need to spend a lot of money to get a high-quality product.

That said it's nice to have it and spend it regardless XD

Yea, it does sound a bit uncivilized when you put it that way. I have a peasants outlook on fragrances and the "fanciest" I'll get is L'Occitane Vetyver EDT or Grey Flannel EDT. That is about as far as I am willing to go with fragrances.

There is one thing that mitigates against wearing any scent and that seems to be blossoming of places that have declared themselves "scent Free zones". It seems scents are becoming as annoying as smoking to some.

The same could probably be said for things like deer musk, castoreum (beaver secretions) ambergris (sperm whale bile) and so on. The truth, regarding the smells, is fairly simple. They smell good to someone, or did at one time. However gross its origins Ambergris is still pleasant smelling. Even today many people feel the same way about various musks and secretions: so much so that deer musk is worth more lb for lb than gold. People in general may not feel the same way about heavy musks and animal secretions now in their pure form but in their heyday there were environmental factors which acclimatized people to these scents.

One need only look at some of the things people choose to eat and drink; in some cases paying through the nose for the privilege. In contrast bum oil sniffing seems almost pedestrian.

Civet coffee, anyone?

It's really interesting how the science of scents goes together. It is an art all it's own. Really looking forward to going to Rome in March. SWMBO and I will be going to visit a few "nose's" and perfumistas. Once you find good attar's, EDP, EDT Or Aoud there really is no reason why you would want to use a body spray.
Unless gimmicky ads and smelling like a 13 yr old works for you. Hell, you can go to Walgreens and get descent EDT for cheap.

The irony here is despite the reputations fragrance have for being expensive they are one of the most accessible forms of art for the general population. Setting reformulations aside, unlike so many other forms of art once the original artist has created the work as a quantifiable formula it can be re-created en mass, and not merely as a tawdry copy or facsimile. Rather like literature and poetry.
