Why do people use after shaves? Is it for skin conditioning or comfort and it comes in different fragrances? Why would I use after shave if I just shaved and my day had mowing the lawn as the first task?

My guess would be because they tighten the skin a bit and have some antiseptic value with most containing alcohol. Add to that the smell purdy factor which pretty much is not necessary to impress the lawn you are going to mow. Under other circumstances it might be a nice touch.

If I have to do physical things that make me sweat I won't use aftershave, I normally won't even shave. But when I do shave I use aftershave for the smell and how it makes my skin feel

You should use an aftershave because shaving is technically breaking the skin and, like Bob said, you need to clean it. Second, shaving your face is also technically a mild trauma to your skin and it should be moisturized.

I at least want to smell good!
It's great if you can have both. W.M. Neumann comes to mind. But too often colognes are sold as aftershaves, DR Harris comes to mind. I like to splash on my aftershaves liberally. If they are too highly scented, all you can manage to work with is a few drops or risk of passing out from it. Considering how I like to use it, I prefer WM Neumann, Myrsol, and bay rum for my aftershaves.
