Best & Worst & Why

What's the best and worst cologne you've tried and why? Much is due to opinion and taste but many things smell nice has anyone had a total shocker with colognes or aftershaves?

I recently got a few samples from a kind purveyor of shaving supplies.

Worst - acqua di parma essenza. STRONG !! Some scents you barely notice are there, this one assaults your senses with a cosh. I was walking faster and faster all day to try and outrun it, by mid afternoon I had a mild headache. Like a refined WD40 smell.

Best - TOBS Jermyn street on the other hand was like a secretly admired friend that always gives you a thrill to see again. Never overpowering, you wish they'd stay longer.

For me, best scent is Perfect Potion vetiver & lime.

No worst yet, all have had some merits, one way or another.

Worst, that's easy, was at the drug store, saw a bottle of Aqua Velva Musk, the Original and Ice Blue were nice...so how could I go wrong.

Even thinking about it triggers waves of nausea.

I washed it off after 5 minutes, could swear I smelled the stuff on and off for the next three days. And I only used a tiny bit to test it out...man that was repulsive stuff IMO.

I'm not hugely diverse but I believe my worst to date is Clubmans Lilac vegetal. Smelled nothing like lilac to me and had a weird ...well I can't even describe it really. watered down something ?? Best so far Like I said, I'm not terribly diversified ...Clubmans Special reserve ...it reminds me of leather and wood.:chapeau

Best for me….mmmm hard one this, but if it was just one and noting else…. CK One…. (however I may change my mind by next week)

Worst…Tabac..only because hours later it smells to me like I have been smoking and I'm an ex-smoker, so its a horrible thought…. It's the only cologne I have ever given away.

This is an intersting thread. Some people love some Colognes and others hate them. Lol. Burberry for men is the only one I didn't like. To me it was like wearing a women's perfume. Hugo is a questionable one (your gonna love this). It smells like urine but I get compliments on it!?! Must be a natural musk. Hahaha. My favorite is Patrick Dempsey II because it has an unusual masculine scent and the wife loves it. I was wearing it when I snagged her up :)

I am very cautious about buying cologne. I have 4 testers I am considering right now. One smells like a monkey's butt (I imagine) or something. The citrus smells are not my favorite but the women seem to love them. I stick with the Chanel line for the most part. Got hooked on it in the 80's .

Rochas Man & Thierry Mugler A-Men are also fantastic scents. I wear these if I'm going on a date or out to meet single gals, but if I'm not on the sniff, I use the vetiver & lime from perfect potion.

Yes, I pretty much stay away from colognes...I find they can be a bit overpowering.

I prefer a nice aftershave, I have a favorite that you have to be quite close to actually notice it, and I've had lots of compliments on it. Never liked the idea of my cologne/AS entering the room before I do...

I like 4711. The "Old Spice" of the past was great, but they've changed the recipe. English Leather was unique. And I liked Yardley.

Have you considered putting a cologne in an atomiser? Some EDT's of course come in one. Atomisers are relatively inexpensive these days, and a light mist of cologne goes a long way with out the overpowering nature of the stuff just splashed on.

Colognes are supposed to be dabbed or sprayed in hot spots on the neck, behind the ears, on the top of the chest etc, not splashed on, thats why they can be over powering, to much is not good. A quality cologne will last much longer than a AS generally. If you don't want to go to the expense of an atomiser then place your finger over the bottle top aperture , upend the bottle on to your finger which is completely closing the end, then dab to apply…. also remember the initial scent needs to dry down for 30 seconds or so, to reach its true intended characteristic. You should not be able to smell it strongly and if you can, you have applied too much.

I agree. I usually just wear an AS since I can't go wrong putting it on as it fades so quickly that within a half hour you have to be VERY close to smell it. Only on special occasions do I wear a cologne. Usually when I get all dressed up and even then it is 1 spray and that's it unless it is exceptionally weak and then maybe MAYBE 2.

I read in another post that men should focus on not smelling bad and women should focus on smelling good. I kinda subscribe to that one but to each their own.

I have to agree with Nightblade Clubmans Lilac vegetal is by far the worst, (Makes me sick to be near it)The best I think is Chanel Bleu with its light citrus notes makes it my go to scent.

I have posted before that I have gone to the practice of filling the sink and adding a few splashes of favorite AS. This does two things...1)Makes for a nice smelling invigorating face splash and 2) Disperses the AS evenly and the scent is lighter and to me more sublime.

I dig Lilac Vegetal by Pinaud Clubman. It may not be my favorite but I do splash it on every now and again. I generally like it after I use MWF.

I add some AS to my unscented witch hazel for the same effect. :) :tu:

The worst smelling that I have tried would have to be Clubmans Lilac vegetal it remined me of the blue water in a port a john my Father in Law really liked it so I gave it to him. As for the best smelling to date it would have to be one of the Floid collection for what ever reason I have been stuck on Floid for the last year and More than likely keep on until I find something else who knows???

Do you use the floid aftershave lotion? I was looking at it the other day and it had a mediocre review, but it's cheap?! I might try it

I do use there A/S I like the Floid Black and there After Shave Balm them best but I do use the Blue, Amber, and the Spanish versions it just depends how I feel as to the one I use. Here is a place you can get samples Garry's Sample Shop

Best: Odori "Tabacco" -- I'm a non/ex-smoker (25 years ago), but I love the smell of good pipe tobacco, or a good cigar. This is it.

Worst: "Chanel pour Homme" -- It's a skin-chemistry thing... gotta be, 'cuz others love it; but it sickens me... go figure.

I shall have to try Special Reserve, that sounds right up my alley.

For me, the worst was "Brut". Reminds me of my teenage years.

My current favorite is Pinaud "Classic Vanilla" though, that may be because of SWMBO's positive reaction. ;) I have some Pinaud Clubman Classic Original unopened, but that Special Reserve sounds like a must-try as well...

I'm pretty easy going when it comes to scents and have many favourites so it's hard to nail it down to just one, but if I could pick something that really stands out for me it would be a tie between Domenico Caraceni 1913 (RIP) and Czech & Speake 88.

As for the worst, I have to agree with the others: Clubman Lilac Vegetal. One of the few scents I found genuinely unpleasant and my wife had an instant allergic reaction to it. Needless to say, I'm glad I was able to sample it before buying lol

Did they discontinue the Domenico Caraceni 1913?? OMG. I never bought any -- wanted the shaving cream AND the EDT, but the budget... Oh, well; in the next life, eh?

Unfortunately it is true, happened about 2 or 3 years ago. I'm kicking myself for not taking the financial hit and buying a bottle :(. I still have a tiny drop of the EdT from a sample bottle I acquired a few years ago, a lone reminder of the glory that was DC 1913....
