I noticed that many of the better shaving soaps, creams and croaps that I enjoy have shea butter as an ingredient. I also noticed that some of the regular Shave of the Day contributors mention it as part of their post shave.
So, I bought some “100% pure organic” shea butter at the local bulk food store and tried it for myself. At $15 CDN for 4 oz (118 ml), it wasn’t overly expensive. Given the amount I used after each of two shaves, that will last me at least a year, I used about the same amount I would use of moustache wax - just enough to coat a finger tip on each cheek.
The feeling on my skin after applying the shea butter is very enjoyable. It moisturizers and softens and seems to last on the skin for quite a reasonable time without feeling greasy. There doesn’t seem to be any particular scent, however, I must caution that my smeller isn’t as sensitive as some, so maybe I just can’t detect it.
Seems to me that this is an economical alternative to relatively expensive post-shave balms, many of which contain perfume scents I don’t want. I can apply my favourite after shaves without worrying about conflicting scents.
