Anybody use this aftershave? I was
thinking of buying some but was
wondering what your thoughts are on
it. Thanks.

Warning!!!!!
This smells like caca for at least 30 minutes after application then it's not bad.... can't beat the price LOL
I almost was going to toss it except the wife noticed the scent a little later in the day and liked it, it also kinda smells like crap in the bottle too :D
Sounds like a winner!! Like you said,
can't beat the price. I'm going to
give the Captains Bay Rum a shot on
your previous advice. Can't buy
just one thing though. :tu

I love the stuff, but it is an acquired taste
I remember someone, somewhere saying that it smelled like cat urine.

I went down tonight and was buying some clubmans bayrum and saw the lilac one was open so gave it a sniff and them put it back on the shelf smelled horrible!
I agree 100%. It most certainly stinks in the bottle and doesnt fair too well on your face for the first 10-15 minutes afterwards. Then, Im not sure if its your olfactory glands waiving the white flag or what, but it starts to smell really good. I just picked up the stuff tonight in my pursuit for glycerin. It will remain a staple on my shelf. Give it a whirl, I dont think you'll be upset. You're wife/girlfriend wont like this one anymore than bay rum though...
I love the stuff. Not sure what kinda caca you guys have. But maybe you should eat some meat?
Smells very green, and by that I mean like freshly cut branches or perhaps "vegetables".
I splash this stuff all over before I go to work. Maybe that's why people are leaving me to do my work lately?
I don't like it much.
Vegetal = similar to vegetables. In wines, generally an undesireable quality.
I think Lilac Vegetal was my first ever aftershave. My grandfather told me that it was, at one time, his favorite. I first bought it back in the 70's when it still came in glass bottles. I loved it back then. Had a very clean, light, pleasing fragrance.
The stuff I buy today still has some of that original scent, but I detect something different, sort of chemically, in the formula. I still like it, but it's just not the same stuff.

I've made the comparison to cat urine and decaying greenery in vase water.
The interesting thing is that it is still on the market. Somehow it must have been highly regarded at one time. I've tried two bottles twenty years apart. It still smells as bad. 1987 and2007. The bottle looks OK for a collection . My 2cents. MikeB
From all your reviews on this, I really
can't wait to get it and splash some
on. Ladies here I come :roflmao .

I like it, but I poured mine out after a girl told me it smelled like baby diapers. :(

Lilac Vegetal was Edouard Pinaud's first aftershave formulated for the Hungarian Calvalry attached to the court of Napoleon III in 1810 (Pinaud was the court perfumer). It was at one time found in almost all barbershops. Still found in many.
For that reason, I'd guess, it's considered a venerable, old-time aftershave.
Suppose it's better than smelling like a Hungarian horse...

I wish I could find this stuff in a local store, that way I can take a wiff of this infamous aftershave without having to actually buy it.
Once when I was shopping for perfume for the BW, an experienced saleslady told me you never judge perfumes by how they smell in the bottle; you put a little on the inside of your wrist and wait a few minutes for the stuff to interact with the chemicals of your skin. That probably happens with Lilac Vegetal too, otherwise I can't imagine how it would have been a barbershop staple for so long.

Well, I finally used the stuff. I didn't
think it smelled that bad in the bottle.
I can see where some people might
be put off. Anyway, I put it on and it
stayed with me for the entire day.
My wife actually thought it smelled
pretty good, so it passes.

I bought some and put it on . I asked my 20 year old daughter hows it smell. She told me it smelled like the one of the urinal pucks in the bathroom. Come to think of it she was right.:roflmao I will stick with the original clubman, now thats what a guy should smell like.:y
My daughter used to work in a resturant and evening clean up consisted of restroom detail. You got to start somewhere.
I picked some up just because...ok, I live near Appleton Barber Supply and I went to get a strop. Of course I had to look at the other things they had. I remembered this thread and woops....of course it wasn't the only thing I got....
As far as the scent..It is wicked old school and reminds me of my Grandmother's house ( a good thing). It also reminds me of being in the florists . All those flowering plants, the damp earth, high oxygen content and the general smell of greenery. Btw my daughter made gagging sounds when I first put it on but later she said she likes it. So, put some on and do a bit of face huffing while thinking of the florist.
