Hey all,
I've seen a number of people using Witch Hazel in the SOTD pictures. This works well for toning the skin and controlling irritation? And do you use it in place of an aftershave, or along with?
Thanks for the feedback!

If I need an after shave I'll use witch hazel, works just fine.
Witch hazel first, cool (not cold) water rinse, pat dry, lastly aftershave = my current ritual.

I don't like it. Opened the first and only bottle this morning and it does nothing for me no scent no cooler than just spashing cold water on your face which is free. Witch hazel gets the thumbs down from me. Use an after shave balm or after shave instead. Just my thoughts on it. You asked I answered. :D

I blend WH with AS 1:1 and then add 8-10 drops of glycerin to every 4 oz of this mixture. The perfect aftershave treatment for me.
I use witch hazel and when it's fully dry on my face I use
aftershave.

i use it and love it. no aftershave only WH.
shave - cold rinse - pat dry .... then i clean the razor, sink.. this gives my face 1min to finish drying. at this point i can feel it becoming dry. this is when i use a spritzer bottle with WH and spritz the face and neck. thats it, im done. no AS. works great every time.
try a different WH. i think most people use the Thayer's Non-Alcoholic type. it can be found in healthfood stores/GNC. it comes in unscented, lavender, and rose. by the way, i use the rose. its not strong but very nice and subtle.

I've also heard good things about the WH w/ Aloe. Thanks for the feedback guys.
CatMan: Do you mix into a decanter of some sort?
I have a bottle of Thayer's WH with Aloe, and to be honest, I can't tell any difference between the times I use it and the times I don't. Of course--as can be seen from the above-noted posts--YMMV.
It also comes in a Lemon scent that is a nice complement to Lime shaving creames and other lime products like Lime Face Food.
zI have a bottle of Proraso A/S splash that contains witch hazel and while I think its a great aftershave, I don't really think it is spectacular or that the witch hazel contributes much. A store in my neighborhood has a special on Thayer's (the whole line) for $5.99 so I will probably end up picking up a bottle just for the hell of it.
The stuff from the drug store smells a little better than cat pee. I only use it if i need too.
I used to use it when I first started wet shaving.
Now I just use an alum block in my regimen.
Apply alum block.
Clean my razor & sink while I let my face rest.
Splash cold water on my face.
Pat dry.
Apply A/S.
I use witch hazel now and again although not so much as an aftershave but along with it. I usually shave before showering and I will always use the witch hazel then for its toning properties. Afterwards I will shower and use the aftershave of my choice once I dry off.
I mix witch hazel into my aftershave balm. A few months ago I got tired of no one having an aftershave balm in the scent I wanted. Now I buy the cosmetic base (body milk), then mix it with witch hazel, cornhuster's lotion, rose water, (sometimes lavender water), then scent it with essential oils myslef. I almost have Colleen's Orange Patchouli shaving cream scent duplicated, so it matches my aftershave balm. It works out great. The aftershave balm has all the properties to meet the requirements of my skin. It is scented the way I want it, and it only cost me about $5 to make a 5 month supply.
I find that ice cold water makes a great aftershave, followed by ZIRH "Soothe" balm. There is no need to put anything that "stings" on your face.....like witch hazel or alcohol. All that does is irritate.
But the sting feels so good! :)
I am noticing that witch hazel does a good job at tightening up the face.
:roflmao Thanks alot, now I'll be thinking about it too.
Great movie, BTW.
I have great results with Thayers alcohol free witch hazel with aloe.
Shave
Cold Water rinse
Alum Block
Cold Water rinse
Pat dry
Witch Hazel
Works just great and with the alum block all but eliminates irritation and ingrown hairs on my neck. I also like rubbing some of the witch hazel on my nose after the shave. closes the pores.
The witch hazel is part of my daily shave regimen. It does have a smell that is reminiscent of sunscreen to me which I've gotten used to. My wife actually loves that smell and says it gives her many fond memories of summer.

I like Dickinson's WitchHazel. I find if I use it alone, it leaves my skin feeling toned and moist. If I use it with another product, the other product seems to cancel out the witchhazel, so I use it alone nowadays. I agree with the above that it has no smell but it does feel good.

I like both Dickinson's and Thayers brands when spring rolls around, mood and Walmart dictates which. The latter being the only retailer in Canada that I know of that carries Dickinson's and cheap at that. I stick to the alum block in winter as it's quite dry in Canada during winter and I use a moisturizer for head an face.
Kind regards,
I also mix the witch hazel into other things. Right now, I have a bottle of Thayer's witch hazel with some Clubman in it.
I use Thayer's Witch Hazel Skin Astringent as an after shave.
Okay, I gave you a thanks on that one. :) Great movie.
Also, thanks to everyone for the useful feedback. I picked up some witch hazel from CVS, and I've noticed a nice toning of the skin after using it.
When I first tried it out, I had a hard time getting used to the Dickinson's scent. It was sort of like a weird smelling wood or something. Now, I'm addicted to it...even my wife likes to use it on her skin and has come to like the smell of it. The scent dries nice and clean and the toning is unbelievable! :tu I'm even to the point where I just use this instead of one of the many after shaves that I've gathered over the years.

I see no reason for using anything much more than Dickinson's --- does the trick for my no-prob skin.
Justin
I use Dickinson's or Thayer's ('bout out of Thayer's, though). I use it first to tone and close up pores before another AS, or just use it alone and then apply whatever EDT or cologne.
Found some at my local Target (Target Brand) for $1.50. 86% Wtch Hazel 14% Alcohol. Tried it out last night I have to say I'm impressed. Not a lot of burn, and closed up a couple of bleeders.
I need it find some small bottles and add a little Tea-Tree oil (I'm hooked on the stuff in my lather now) and glycerine to make a nice AS.
I'm very tempted to try out the witch hazel/astringent PADS, like what Classic Shaving has for sale.
Anyone try these out? I've been using the steam towel at the end of the shave to apply the WH, just figure it might be a little easier than the towel.
Just got my hands on a bottle today. I quite like the price, but it had better work well, 'cause the smell is awful!
I use this as a part of my routine after cold water. This usually tightens up the skin a little and closes up any little mistakes. Then I apply balm.
