I must say that I usually love to use aftershaves but Tabac is too sweet smelling stuff for me and it lasts too long.
My cents.
I love Tabac a/s. I will always have it as part of the rotation. It reminds me of growing up in the 70s and my father used to use it once in a while. Nostalgia is part of the appeal for me.

I like it!

It is a very traditional, alcohol-based aftershave. If you like the scent then you should be ok with it. The scent is pretty strong and will linger so it is not an aftershave that you will be easy to pair with a different cologne.
I use to use it once in a while while I was Mach 3 (spit) shaving. My dad also used it mainly in the summers. I think apart from its very distinctive, strong and masculine scent, it is worth noting that it is very oily and gives a refreshing 'covering' feeling after applying to the face. It burns like hell of course so you have been warned.
Strangely enough, I picked up a small bottle (50ml) this week just to try it out again now that I am shaving properly. If I don't like it, you'll find it in the for sale section of the forums!
Im going to give it another shot, but it just dont smell that good to me.
you know Mike, Your not alone. I hear a lot of guys saying that they don't like the smell of Tabac period. Not just the AS, but the soap and cream as well. They do make shave cream in a tube. It's OK, The soap lathers really well, The smell kinda grows on ya after a while...Rich
Man I dont know if I can handle this stuff, a friend gave me a sample of Tabac soap, I lathered it up tonight and just shaved my neck. I have to say it lathers nice and it's slick, Im not sure if my shaving technique is getting better, or my stropping is getting better but I got a really good shave off this stuff. But Im sitting here and I cant stand the smell. I used MWF last night for the first time , It lathered great for me, I like the smell but it's definitly not as slick as Tabac. I dont know if anyone looks for slickness but for the short time I have been straight shaving I notice some soaps are drier than others and my razor doesnt seem to slide as easy. So far tabac seems to be the slickest, Im not going to give up on it just yet.
I haven't used the soap, just the cream and it seems to work really well. But I'd say don't torture yourself. If you don't like the scent, there's no point of forcing yourself. Leave it for a while, you may feel differently if you try it in few months.
When I switched to this way of shaving I disliked a lot of stuff. Now my tastes are completely different and I like things I never thought I'd like.
To quote Lynn 'have fun' :)
gugi, that is a good point, I now collect certain guns that 20 yrs ago I didnt like and said I would never own. I'll put the Tabac away for a while.
Gugi has a point. The first time I tried Tabac soap based on tons of positive recommendations, I smelled it and thought "they must be kidding" - I instantly thought '70s, Carter administration, gold chains, polyester shirts, Playboy, and disco. I put it away.
After a few months, I picked it back up again. It really grew on me, and it's a top-tier soap. Liked it so much, I bought a big bottle of the AS. It's really a clean, floral, classic, masculine scent, if not abused. Germany's answer to Old Spice. :D
I used to despise Aqua Velva too, and have since ended up using it every day...sparingly. I also like high-end colognes (Creed, Serge Lutens, Guerlain, etc.), so it's not a drug-store-scent fetish. But these old scents are classics for good reason, generation after generation. Certainly don't wear what you don't like, but maybe give Tabac another chance in the future.
Just got a stick of irisch moos. Lathers just like tabac but smells a lot better. As far as i no they are made by the same company. Moos is hard to get but it was well worht the wait.
Hi Hillie, Welcome to the forum.
Dont worry it seems there are more people who like Tabac then ones who dont. I thought the AS was a lot stronger than the shave soap.
Im a bit of a fan :D
Hi Mike, a late thanks for the welcome.
In the mean time, I received the Tabac and the first time I opened it I thought: "Oh man. It reminds me of grandma". Some strange connection. The second time "Hmmm, not so bad". Now I wonder why I bought so many different soaps, because I do dig the Tabac. The other ones I have are quite promising too.
So now I'm thinking about picking up a Tabac AS as well, just for the fun of it. :D
I love Tabac. :D :hmmm: It reminds me of clubbing in the 70s and the 80s. :D
I just cant do it, I sniffed it again and that smell is sickining.
Reminded me that I need to order another bottle of the stuff. :D
I like it and I get it with free shipping thru Amazon.
Are you guys serious with this stuff ?
I love it as well! one of my favorites.
Wifey likes it! She likes it!
Seriously, my wife really likes it on me. I don't have the shaving soap yet, but the aftershave is one that I use regularly. And .... I use the deodorant sometimes too.
The soap is brilliant Mike, just try a puck and if you still don't like it after two or three times, sell it again. Maybe the AS is a bit too much, especially in the beginning. I had to get used to the soap's scent as well, and that's likely not as heavy as the AS.
Hillie when I first joined here I also joined another shave forum and a member on the other forum send me some Tabac soap, I tried it and hated it fron day one, I tried it again a few weeks later and I still didnt like it. After smelling the AS I was convinced I hated the stuff. Now MWF smells great.
Mike, have you tried the Irish Moos? I love Tabac and IM, they both perform very well, IM is a bit easier on the nose though with a bit of an Irish Spring smell.
I've thought of posting something similar on this thread. I resisted the Tabac consensus for a while then finally tried it and… yeah it's great. Not mad about the scent but the hot towels take care of that. My daughter went to Germany on a shopping trip so I asked her to get some Moos and I love it. Same great quality shave but with a slightly lighter and very different scent. Never been to Ireland so have no idea what an Irish Spring smells like.
Guess I just got hooked on the designer soaps, Im now into Colleens soaps just ordered a few cant wait to get them.
Joe I havent tried Irish Moose but I hear good things about it, I will end up trying that . Hillie, the Tabac is long gone, I gave it away. I just didnt have the heart to charge anyone for that stuff... lol
It's funny how smells can instantly recall memories.I've got Tabac soap ordered and the name alone reminds me of when I bought the aftershave for my boss one christmas in the seventies.I thought it was great then so I can't see my taste being any different now but then you never know.
