When to use Bay Rum?

Hi everyone, I'm hoping you can help me.

I am in contact with the guys at Ogallala about purchasing there 5 sample pack of bay rum and shipping it here to Germany but after reading the forums I'm a bit stumped about where to put it in my shave setup.

So after the shave I:
Cold water rinse
AlumBlock (let it soak for a few minutes)
warm rinse
Lime Skin Food

Any ideas? I like the setup at the moment for work as the scent of the skin food dissipates, but the experiences that some members here have made me want to try it and it sounds good for weekends with the GF or evenings.

If you want to work it into your current set-up, I would use it before the Skin Food. Give it a few minutes to dry out before applying the SF.

In the summer, when it's not so dry out, I skip the skin food and just use Dominica Bay Rum (I put about 1/4 teaspoon of glycerin in the bottle).

Wow. I didn't realize there was such a ritual. I just wipe off the soap and apply the bay rum (or sometimes Witch Hazel or some type of commercial after shave.

After the shave it usually takes me 5 mins to do my setup but I work in brushing my teeth so usually there isn't much time lost! Give it a try

I rinse my face with warm water to make sure all the soap is off my face, than I pat cool water on my face (I hate ice cold water) , I dry my face , I clean up my mess in the bathroom and let my face relax while Im cleaning my brush and drying my razor, then I put on bay rum.

I keep it simpler too - warm rinse, cold rinse, AS and if needed, a balm type product after I'm done dressing. That's it.

I'm quite happy to change the setup if the Bay Rum does the same job as either the Alum Block or SF.

With my original setup I find that the SF is moisturising but I find that the Alum Block is great for helping to keep visible razor burn to a min.

Love the Ogalala BR! Use it in warm weather right after WH. Although the Ogallala does contain WH as well.

use it anytime you want...whether you shave or not...i love bay rum and all aftershaves...i use them frequently just cuz i like how my face feels after

The scent of Bay Rum does not last long, at least in my skin. Erictski got it right on, there is not a bad time to use Bay Rum, use when you want a clean, crisp and refreshing feeling in your face. I have some of the Ogalla Bay Rum. When I use it, I use it last. Yes, the scent is faint, but it is there nonetheless (I don't like having a strong scent anyway). I finish up my shave, rinse clean, pat dry, splash on some witch hazel, then apply the Bay Rum. I do exactly the same thing after every shave, regardless of what aftershave I'm going to finish with.

I bought Ogallalla Bay Rum Cologne, it smells great, not to strong and it last a little longer. Im probally going to see if I could get it in the big (Grolsch Bottle) size

Mike, have you tried Meehans?

I just completed a test using St Pinaud in a 1oz spray. That brand doen't last long but it went 7 days. I was thinking of decant my Meehans into the sprayer for a lighter effect (dose) prior to going to dinners on an up coming cruise. The big splash after shaving is okay if you are going of ship into the ports but could be too much for those having allergys. I also like their Bay Rhum (that's how they spell it) saioors salve. works great on my rough hands.

Im not familiar with Meehans , Im fairly new to straight shaving and have only tried the most popular scents and most all the different brands of Bay Rum that I have read about here. Im going to do a search for Meehans, but if you have a link that would be great.

I don't have any sensitive skin problems, but I just do a cold water rinse, a cold towel press, then a splash of after shave or witch hazel... That works great for me, so I'd go with a cold rinse/towel, then straight to the bay rum;)

Sounds good to me, paid for my order last night so hopefully should be able to try all the advice soon! Just need some more soaps now......:w

I have a fairly full beard so my shaving time is rather short most days. Sunday mornings though I get serious about it and do any trimming that's required as well.

What actually is Bay Rum???

A scent like no other and no two bay rums smell the same...its a great adventure to try them

smells of rum and bay leaves ... haha ... kind of a no brainer...

but most have a clovey spicey scent...others a little hint of vanilla...

my favorites are Capt Smiths Bay rum spicey and rummy

Ogallala Bay rum more sweet and vanillaey

Dominica Bay rum more neautral but still spicey...not sweet at all. mild

This is a tricky one. The first impulse would be to say that Bay Rum is made by soaking Bay leaves in Rum, right? This is somewhat correct but pretty misleading. The bay refers to the "Bay Rum tree" (a.k.a Pimenta racemosa), a tree indigenous of the Caribbean and closely related to Allspice, not Laurus nobilis, which is the spice that we know as Bay. The essential oil from P. racemosa is obtained by distillation, not maceration (soaking). In principle, you could use ethanol obtained from any source to make Bay Rum, but probably for historical reasons and availability, Rum seems like a good source. Mike, you asked "What actually is Bay Rum". I'll jump into this question trying to keep it short. From what I've read...

The original bay rum was made by breaking the leaves of a particular bay tree, which is specific to the Carribean, into pieces and soaking them in dark rum for a month or more. Most of the alcohol content would evaporated away leaving a spicy, and earthy mixture most would not drink but found it good for attracting the darlin's in port.

Now whether that was the exact way they did it, I don't know. You could read marketing materials from a number of producers claiming that they have a "traditional" recipie or that their product is made the same way it has been for 400 years. All of that may be true. I'd look at the ingredients list and make my own judgments.

Nowadays, traditional Bay Rum is made with the same basic items but more spices and other things are added. The better Bay Rums, or Rhum, products made today use the oils from the same Bay tree leaves and cane sugar alcohol with a varying concoction of spices. There are, however products called Bay Rum which use bay oils from a similar tree and lots other oils and spices.

Bottom lines is that you have to decide what you like to smell on you. I've heard of people who love St Pinuad but did not like the way is faded so quickly. That was solve by adding a small (1/4 teaspoon) of glycerin.
I have also heard tell of those that mix brands to get a completly different scent.

There are five or so brands that folks seem to like. I have my favorites but still try others when I have the chance.

This seems like an appropriate question for this thread. I was about to order the big $20 bottle of Ogalalla when I saw a bottle the same size (but not as pretty) in a barber shop for $7. They were out of stock so I didn't get to sample it and I haven't been back there since. (It's out of town.) Anyone had experience with cheap rum?
