Ogallala Bay Rum vs. Others

Some time ago, I took advantage of the Ogallala one cent offer. To my surprise, I got not only a small bottle of after shave for my penny but also a slightly larger bottle of cologne. (For those you who haven'd tried Bay Rum, this is a great introduction to it.) I found I love the stuff. I polished off the AS and am now using the cologne. My only complaint is that the smell seems to fade pretty quickly. Within an hour or two, it's pretty much gone. For those of greater experience than I, is this typical of Bay Rum or is it unique to Ogallala? And are other brands as good? I recall reading threads that seemed to indicate that there's a wide difference from one brand to another.

Yes it does fade pretty quickly doesn't it. Try the double strength. I think it is the best bay rum out there and lasts the longest. It still fades quicker than I would like. I wish they would make the Bay Rum and Sandalwood in double strength. I would get a couple gallons. The soaps are first class too.

Joeman sent me a blob of Ogaalla bay rum soap, it is good stuff! I haven't tried the aftershave, but I heard is was pretty good....

I have no experience with the AS or the cologne, but the scent from the Bay Rum and Sandalwood soap, lingers all day. It is fantastic.

I find that with the Ogallala, splashing a bit of water on your face will bring back the scent a bit after it fades. You may also want to rub a bit into your neck in addition to your face; the extra heat helps radiate the scent a bit more (if that's what you're going for).

I actually like the scent more as it fades and mingles with my own scent; at that point, the scent is only noticeable when a person is close enough for contact. I believe this is how scents are supposed to be worn.

I find that fading quickly is an intrinsic property of Bay Rum, if Ogallala last for an hour, I should probably try it ;-). I have a couple that only last for a few minutes, at least in my skin. There was a similar discussion in this thread: http://straightrazorpalace.com/after...bay-rum-2.html.

I love the Ogallala scent, especially the double-strength! Absolutely best smelling Bay Rum I have used. :tu:bow

BUT, am I the only one who does not like the fact that Ogallala after-shave, cologne, etc. is not a homogenous product? The frangrance oils (or essential oils) are not "mixed" in. Even with severe shaking before use, I feel like the Oils are largely left on my hands and washed away after application to the face, neck, pulse points, etc.:confused:

Maybe it's just me ???????

I definitely agree with this as well. I am not a huge fan of overly powerful scents. The great thing about Ogallala is that subtlety isn't very hard to achieve (i.e. I don't have to worry about overdoing it as much as some others). I sometimes wear T&H Spanish Leather, and I have to be extremely careful about the amount used. If I use any more than a little drop, the stuff becomes too powerful and a little sickening IMO!

I have only used 2 bay rums (Ogallala and C.O. Bigelow) and they both seem pretty subtle. Ogallala has a better scent IMO. If more scent is wanted I would go with the double strength from Ogallala.

I would also like to add, that if every man smelled like Ogalalla Bay Rum and Sandalwood, the world would be a happier place. At least for me. :p

I think the essential oils don't mix because Ogallala contains little or no alcohol to act as an emulsifier. A brand like Dominica Bay Rum doesn't have this mixing issue, because it contains a very high alcohol percentage. BUT - they each have a very different feel on the skin... ;)

I also use another aftershave called Verlaine from Provence Sante. Like Ogallala, it has little to no alcohol, is very soothing, a great scent, and has to be shaken vigorously to mix. Instead of Bay oil, it contains essential oils from vervain and linden, and shea butter.

Horses for courses. I actually like a clean, bracing, antiseptic burn after a shave. But I also like some moisturizing afterwards. So, I generally go with a small amount of a high-alcohol AS that fades quickly to avoid a scent clash, followed by something like Ogallala or Verlaine or Trumper's Skin Food that is more soothing and moisturizing.

I love the tightening and toning aspect of the aftershave as well as the scent - it tightens my skin so much it can make a slightly less-than-perfect shave feel absolutely BBS for a good 4 or more hours while the aftershave's effect lasts.

Thanks to all for your comments. While I don't like the overpoweing strengh of many aftershaves, I wish I could a subtle but long lasting scent. I guess you can't hve both.

I've tried, and liked, three Bay Rums so far. Pinuad (bought at my local Walgreens Drugs store) Mehans (bought through Bonny Dune Farms site), and Ogalalla (bought through...ah...Ogalalla):) . I was not surprised, as I had been reading here, that each one is different and unique.

The most familiar is the old barber shop standby by Pinuad. I added about a half teaspoon of pure gylcerine to it and it helped the skin and durability. The Mehans is by far the nicest and classyest (sp) smelling of the three. It also lasts the longest...and is the most expensive. Ogalalla has this woody overtone to it that I like and having bought the double strength right off I got a serious dose the first time I used it. Caution, shake well and use sparingly. I bought some 1oz glass pump sprayers which work very well.

I would say that if you like anything about Old Spice or Stetson, you'll find Bay Rum to your liking as well. All of them fade from the initial burst of that wonderful aroma within a half hour, but it's there, and you'll be told how wonderful you smell by anyone who you let get close enough. I use the arm test. Spray or dab some on your forearm and forgetaboutit. A few hours later take a sniff where you put it. Betchya it's there.

Of course if you rinse or wash your forarm it won't be but you knew that didn't you.

I've been using the Dominica Bay Rum because I like aftershaves which have a nice bracing antiseptic effect when they go on, and then do not leave a strong scent afterwards.

That's my bay rum order.

HoneyBeeGardens bay rum is real nice too but it's less known.

As I understand it, the oils are not in solution due to the fact that no or little alcohol is used. I don't mind shaking the bottle before each use and I seem to get even coverage of scent.

When I buy my Ogallala a/s I buy it on ebay, comes from OBR, but for some reason the website doesn't have the large apothecary bottles listed. My next order (a large bottle lasts about a year for me), will be the double strength.

Just got a small bottle of Ogalla bay rum aftershave and its quite nice! not overpowering smell and its soothing when you splash it on.
