The First Aftershave

Gentlemen,

From what you can remember, what was your first aftershave lotion? I don't mean what the barter used on you. Rather, what you first used on yourself. I don't remember when exactly I began to shave. Nor do I remember when I began using aftershave lotion.

What made me think of this subject was when I realized this morning I was out of English Leather. For as far back as I can remember, I have never been out of English Leather. That was enough to give me a sense of discomfort, as if I were at a party where I knew no one.

Then I realized I do not remember the names of any aftershaves I might have used before English Leather. Could then English Leather be the first aftershave I used.? It sounds like it.

So again, from what you remember, what was your first aftershave lotion?

Luckily, the human mind hardly ever forgets scents. It was Azzaro Pour Homme, in 1978. I still like it, but I would not wear it anymore. Maybe in 2038. :)

If my memory serves correctly, it was something by Hermes... in the second half of the 80s.

The very first time I have ever laid my hands on an after shave product was in the late 70's, when I was about 6 or 7 years of age (I did obviously not shave yet at that time...) and was trying to imitate Dad. The product I splashed onto my face was "Nr. 4711 Echt Koelnisch Wasser"

The first aftershave lotion I've used after shaving for the first time was the Nivea Balm (which I still use once in a while..)

Thats a good question, and the creaking you might be able to hear is my brain trying to recall what it was..!

I think it was CK Be, the one in the matte black bottle. That would have been around 1998 I guess.

I use a mix of aftershaves now, depending on the time of year and my mood. I usually have Aqua di Gio and Him, Hugo Boss (both Boss and Hugo, two different scents), Allure and theres another one that I cant remember the name of. I'm not really such a fan of the more tradititional scents, I like lighter citrus-y stuff.

Old Spice, if memory serves. Part of a cologne/aftershave/deodorant(?) gift set.

Old-Spice.. Still use it too. It's what my grandpa used, what my dad used, and what I use... though I have also added Truefitt and Hill, Stetson and British Sterling to the mix these days.

Man that was loong ago, I remember using Denim the most.
Most used one recently Nivea aftershave balm.

I'm almost sure that it was Old Spice and the year was 1979 or 1980.
Still using it.

The first balm would be the older Perry Ellis stuff... first real alcohol based AS was Adidas sport... now I mainly use Clubman AS and Nivea AS balm!

For me: gravity and aspen.

brut was mine it was one of the 2 or 3 my step father used and he taught me to shave in a gas staition restroom of all places and is also a looooong story there but now hes gone to the great beyond but brut is still one of my favorites

Avon Wild Country in a horsehead shaped bottle. My sister gave it to me for my birthday with the promise I give her back the bottle. She collected horsey stuff. I still use it occasionally but have matured into more sophisticated scnets. And she still has the bottle.

I think I used either Canoe or Pinaud Clubman. I'm guessing that would have been around 1995-96?

Some of you older guys have a better memory than me. I am nursing a small hangover, though.

Late 70's, Old Spice if I recall right but might also been Tabac, Denim or Blue Stratos.

Old Spice, a bottle of my Dad's that had sat in the bathroom cabinet for as long as I could remember. I'd wanted to use it for as long as I could remember too. Stung like hell.

Good question Obie, how is the cold water no mirror shave going btw?

Its taken 20 mins and a full plate of Dinner to remember it was Blue Stratos!
1983 just left school, first wage packet I bought a safety razor, soap, brush and after shave, I felt so grown up

I'm pretty sure it was Old Spice....I probably got it as gift....

It was a long time ago, but I'm pretty sure my first aftershave was Old Spice. I know how it is with old favorites; I still keep a bottle of it handy. IIRC English Leather was a favorite also, as was Brut.

Same here, I got for christmas waaaay back when!

1990 Oldspice. Still have Oldspice in my line up but most often it is Nivea Replinshing Balm. Really enjoy the scent on this one. My wife likes the Old Spice better though.

Wow! You have to go and make me think that far back?! I can't remember the exact scent of it, but my first aftershave was from Avon. I think the bottle was in the shape of a car of clear blue glass.

Long time ago, but either old spice or english leather.

British Sterling given to me by my Grandpa around 1980. I think.

Wow, I'm feeling pretty unoriginal here, but I have to say Old Spice as well. Followed closely by English Leather if I remember correctly. Both are favorites of my Grandpa. When I was a kid he used to give me a slash of his AS when he finished shaving, and will always be a scent I am fond of.

Def old spice, but it wasnt after shaving i ended up with a couple of bottles after my grandpa past, it was his scent of choice. After shaving would have to be nivea balm, i think thats spelled right. I still use it occasionally. love the scent.

Mine hasn't changed: About 1 part Hermes Eau d'orange vert (E de C) and 10 parts witch hazel.

Hey, that was a long, long time ago, but it was probably "Mennen Skin Bracer" - which I still use occasionally. (not the same btl, of course)

It was my father Old Spice. I destictly remember bathing in it.

When my grandfather died, there were two cases of aftershave that I inherited: Old Spice and Aqua Velva. Of course, being a kid at the time, I went for the Aqua Velva......what kid could resist that blue color? I liked the smell. The Old Spice was ok, but everyone said I smelled like an old man.....at the ripe old age of 8.

Oh crap, it's almost gone. You'd think you could get more than 70 years or so out of a bottle.
