Colleen
I like open pour, small hole, plastic bottle.

I agree with Nenad, but I have a hankering to try an atomizer. If it wasn't so girly I'm sure I would have tried it all ready. Thats what there using at the end of that shaving clinic isn't it? That would be cool. But just a bottle with a small hole would be good. I prefer really elegant looking glass bottles myself. I would rather have to shake the bottle to get a few drops of product on my hand than turn the bottle over and have product pouring out.
I agree the shaking would be pretty good. I wouldn't like an atomizer. Just my 2 cents.:)
I don't like atomizers. I do like the way Pinaud dispenses -- a little shake to get a little product out of the bottle.
Trumper's are my favorite bottles. A metal on metal screw off crown cap that is the perfect shaker IMO. Cool looking frosted glass with the company name and where they are in raised letters down the side. Old school. I prefer shakers as well. Would a spritzer be the same as an atomizer? Hard to find colognes in anything other than the spray/spritz whatever.

That sounds nice, where can I buy/see those? I think the have an "...de toilet" in Quinine scent that just rocks.
I forgot to mention, my preference is for the balm aftershave. For the watery-type, Old Spice bottle is nice, shake and splash...Quote:

I have to agree that I prefer the balm type, too. Nothing is more convenient than the Trumper's Skin food in the squeeze bottle. :)
But, if it's a liquid, I'm a splash sort of guy myself. Rub it between the hands and onto the face. For cologne, a squirt at the pulse points.
Squeeze bottle--Coral Skin Food, open top--TF&H and pump bottle like feather after shave gel are my preferences.
I have an atomizer with the Bump Eraser product and find that it is hard to control. Too much sprays out into the environment and innocent bystanders.
Good Morning Gentlemen,
WoW! Thanks for all the input, and I really like the picture of the bottle with the metal cap. I am trying to figure out the best method of delivery for the 3 samples of Aftershave that will be going out to my 3 volunteers on this site.
But...I am also trying to figure out the favored container once my product line is developed and is on the shelf so to speak. Looks like a nice glass container with a shaker top or something with a very small hole...
While I have your attention..I really need someone to explain the difference between the following: Aftershave....Aftershave Balm....Aftershave Milk
They seem very similar to me and I'm not sure how you are separating them when you are looking to purchase one or the other ??
Warm Regards, Colleen
Here's how I break them down...
After Shave....alcohol based liquid, antiseptic properties because of the alcohol, bracing, and good for warmer weather. A little too drying for the winter unless you have very oily skin.
Balm..more of a lotion, thick and very moisturizing. Good for the dryer months, but not my favorite in the summer. Makes me break out in hot weather.
Milk...sort of halfway between the two.
Hope that makes sense .................................................. .......Jeff
Aftershave without alcohol is not aftershave. And a donut with no holes, is a danish ;)
just joking... Jeff is right on the spot. But if you replace some of the alcohol in the classic aftershave recipe with witch hazel, I think you can get the same effect with less burn. Hey, witch hazel is watery cosistancy, right??
Nenad
I think the point of the denatured alcohol that forms the basis of most aftershaves is to keep the other stuff in the aftershave (the fragrance and what have you) in suspension. Though there are plenty of 'balms' with a healthy dose of alcohol and menthol in them for that lovely, wonderful burning feeling.
However, my skin is often dry enough as it is, so I tend to shy away from anything with an alcohol base.
But, yes, basically, the aftershave is a liquid, the balm is a lotion, and the milk is sortof a thicker liquid. I don't think content has anything to do with the distinction, though, since there are plenty of alchohol based balms out there, too.
I like the squeeze balm, Emily's place moisture balm/aftershave balm. I also have her super moisturizer that is in a little plastic bowl type thing that you just dab the fingers in. I also like this. But the classic pinaud splash head is great.
Good Morning Gentlemen,
Please forgive my slow responce...All comments are greatly appreciated. I have searched the internet for hours, literally...I find that all the nice containers/bottles with those beautiful lids, must be purchased in rather large quantities aka 10,000 pcs min. order.
So that leaves this small business owner using PET (glass like plastic) bottles with a disc cap for aftershave, or a squeeze type bottle with a disc cap for aftershave balms...which is more than sufficient, but man I really liked that bottle in the photograph!
Best Regards, Colleen

LOL.... Good Morning Ed...Who knows, maybe someday I'll be purchasing in 10k quantities..but for right now its PET Plastic.. I'm suffering from the "Champagne" Taste..."Beer" Budget syndrome ;)
Colleen
Colleen,
I wouldn't worry too much about it - I mean, I love nice bottles, but the Coral Skin Food that is one of my favorite products comes in a plastic squeeze bottle.
And frankly, for something like a balm, that's so much more convenient anyway. I hated having to bang a bottle on my hand to get the aftershave out in little dribs and drabs.
Good Morning Keith,
I agree with you completely..Balms should be in a squeeze type container..but this leads me to my next and continuing problem; There seem to be several types of Aftershave:
Aftershave, Aftershave Tonic, Aftershave Balm, Aftershave Milk, Aftershave Lotion.
By description from other fellas this is my understanding:
Aftershave- a true aftershave is used after the shave to disinfect, tone and tighten the pores, alcohol based, not scented...but could be, essential oils only--appropriate container ( PET bottle w/dispensing cap)
Aftershave- also seems to fall in the category of a light cologne, alcohol based, light scent..essential oils or fragrance -container (a nice heavy masculine glass w/small hole for shaking to dispense)
Aftershave Balm-Milk-Lotion- Still in the class of a true aftershave, with a diluted alcohol base of maybe 20% ...or maybe no alcohol, the base would be witch hazel, aloe vera... with added emollients for gents with sensitive or dry skin. --container ( a squeeze type or maybe something with a pump??)
Now Please feel free to chime in, At first these differences seemed a bit confusing to me. Am I on the right track?
Colleen
Actually, there are two kinds of aftershave: Waterlike alcohol based one, and thick milkier one. For the first kind you can use tiny hole, open pour, Old Spice like bottle, for second one squeeze bottle is better...
nenad
Actually in my opinion who cares as long as it smells good.
LOL....O.K. I know some of these questions must seem pretty "dense" to put it nicely. The root of the question is based from a marketing/advertising point of view.
I formulate a product, decide what type of container it needs to go in, how the product will be dispensed...according to the thickness of the product, then I must also label the product correctly.
If you receive a balm-lotion aftershave in a container with a shaker type lid, labeled as an aftershave...you are not going to be a happy customer.... ;)
Sooo, I ask these seemingly pointless questions...but with a goal in mind. All of your suggestions and comments make a big difference in how I choose what goes with what...So just keep throwin em out there!
XXWarm Regards, Colleen
Aftershave, I prefer open pour myself. For Edu au toilette or cologne, I prefer spay. Don't care for balms, just good ol alcohol aftershaves like BayRum. Who's your daddy?
Hmmm....Who's your Daddy? LOL....is that a comment ? or a question ? ;)
Colleen
I've been trying to stay away from alcohol based aftershaves, myself. Alcohol dries the skin somethin' awful.
Anyway - I'm not sure what the difference between an aftershave and an aftershave tonic is. Ultimately, as far as I know, the differences are: Watery (aftershave, and I assume tonic), slightly thicker than that (aftershave milk), and thick (balms).
I don't know if something like the coral skin food would fall into a category of "slimy" - they don't label it anything other than a "soothing preparation for after shaving." I would probably consider it a balm.
Generally, though, these are all "aftershave". Anything with a liquidy consistency can be in a splash bottle, though the fancy pinhole tops are only for the really watery kind of aftershave. Colognes go in a spray bottle or atomizer. I really do like the squeeze bottle for balms, because I hate hammering them against my hand to get some out. And you never get the right amount. And it makes a mess. Yuck.
Why do I feel like saying this means I'm just confusing matters further? I should be quiet now.
Something that just comes out of my mouth when I splash that Bayrum on. :DQuote:

The after shave milk is still thin enough to dispense from an old spice like bottle (old spice sensitive is a bit milky and comes from their traditional bottle). I think the witchazel instead of straight alcohol is a great idea since I like to feel the aftershave working a bit (like the Nivea Balm) but don't like to restrain a shout of pain when the shave is a bit too close :D Also, there is the skin food category which I believe is seperate from the original three and goes into an after shave lotion or moisturizer category which would be one stage thicker than balm (which still flows, only slower)
I also totally agree about the frustration of banging the bottle. I've kept a bottle of Nivea balm going for weeks after it stopped pouring. It almost seemed biblical how long the bottle lasted after I figured it was the last day!!
LOL...You Fellas have the best sense of humor!
Most of my life I have known men with beards...I had no idea about all these different categories. It has been and is "continuing" to be quite a learning experience.
