I have noticed, the better (sharper razor) the shave, less sting there is...
I always interpreted the sting as either not sharp enough, causing me to use too much pressure or too fine an edge. I think both would cause the sting by shaving off the top layer of skin.
I just noticed this a few minutes ago. I followed my normal routine, had a really good shave, not baby butt smooth but good enought to satisfy me. My face looked fine after the shave, no irritation or redness...Then I put on my Nivea cooling aftershave balm. It stung almost immediately and now my neck is irritated and red. I know It will be OK in a couple hours but I was wondering if anyone had any advice. I have thought about going without the aftershave but I know I would regret that later. Does anyone else have this issue? Should I wait longer before applying the A/S?
For all I know it could be something with my shaving technique since this only happens on my neck.
Just in case anyone was wondering this happens no matter what aftershave I use.
Thanks
I don't get intimidated by the sting, especially since the redness disappears in 5-10min and I use a 55% alcohol aftershave and do 3 passes, with one against the grain. The redness disappears within minutes, and as for the pain, I have 3 words of advice: Be a man!

The sting doesnt bother me, in fact in the mornings its better than coffee! However, my skin gets irritated and stays irritated for a number of hours, so if I have to go into work or have a meeting with clients, I tend to use skin food as an aftershave because there is no irritation or redness.

I like the sting myself. I typically notice more burn when I've used a little more pressure then usual, typically after hitting the pasted strops to restore the edge. I usually do a rinse to get the remaining soap off, then hit the Pinaud. Love it.
I'm not using standard after shave so I don't notice much sting at all. Try Thayer's Witch Haze w. Aloe. Gegtik saw it in my bathroom, decided to try it and sais it's the best after shave treatment he's tried.

I find the duller the razor the more the sting!
I get "sting" even after using a Feather, so for me, the sharpness isn't an issue. It's more about about the aftershave. And maybe I just have sensitive skin. Now, Pinaud's Bay Rum...that's more of a friggin' "face in an open blast furnace" feeling, even after a Feather. I like it. :D
I rather enjoy the "cool sensation" that comes with applying aftershave. Bay Rum sounds worthy of the experience, that may be the next thing I try.
yeah, I get that "blast furnace" feelling after any kind of alcohol based aftershave. Some scents are worth it though. Like Bay rum...I love that eventhough it gives me that "Home alone" type of wanting to scream like a little girl.
I use some nivea aftershave balm (w/ alcohol) and I kind of like the string. First time I used after shave it hit me like a ton of bricks, I just went "whoa, that was cool". After that it was never as potent for some reason.
Recently, just to test/switch things up, I started using a refreshing splash of cold water on my face before the a/s balm. I find that it helped tame some of that sting, but the a/s balm didn't seem seem to sooth as much after that either.
yeah, but the Nivea doens't really have hat much alcohol in it. I use that stuff and don't really mind. It's when I use something that has a LOT of alcohol.
DBR has just the right amount of c2h5oh -- 55%. However, when you use one of those fancy designer ones with an alcohol content of 70%, that's when it feels like your face is being burned off your head. I still have to admit that Paco made a great scent lol.
Two words: Alum block.
I think several things are going on...1st the razor is not sharp enough...2nd your angle of shaving is too great and you are scraping your face...narrow the shaving angle ...3rd you are applying too much pressure, a really sharp razor glides over your face...4th apply lots of ice cold water after removing soap ,this will allow your pores to close then apply aftershave
My razors are sharp enough and I may be overdoing it with my description of the 70% stuff, but I have zero issues with 55% stuff. As for the razors, they glide over the face even when going against the grain. I'm careful with my blade angles. I also apply plenty of cold water and let it dry on it's own while I clean/strop the blade before applying aftershave. The bottom line is that I have sensitive skin. I get a bit of a sting if I use an alcoholic aftershave even after shaving with an electric which doesn't exfoliate nearly as much as a straight.
