Help Me Find the Burn

As my skills developed using a straight I realized that the burn consistently reduced (duh!)
At the Yakima meet Glen spouted the burn of Captains Smith's Bay Rum. After trying it I was a little disappointed in how little burn it had.
I took my Ogallala and added a touch more clove to the bottle!
BTW the Ogallala bath soap gave a little burn. Yay :D
I have been debating on searching through the homemade bayrum threads to just make my own.
I request from the greater good. Apart from straight alcohol what would give me back the burn I so very miss?
Doesn't have to be bay rum I have some osage on order.

If you like the burning freeze of menthol. May I suggest adding menthol crystals to your favorite AS. You can dial it up as much as you wish with crystals, but you must be a careful or your eyes may be still watering and your face beet red an hour after your shave.

Its not so much the menthol that I like. I just like a burn and thought that with the summer coming the menthol burn would be nice.
I used to really like what I got from most of my splashes, witch hazel and rose water.
I have been debating lately to make a final scraping pass just to get the burn, but I really can't handle the wind chapping after I do that.

Yeah yer on the right track with the Osage Rub, that stuff is pretty good...

I find Aqua Velva gives me a good burn

to me.. there is no other burn better than that which is provided by pinaud clubman virgin island bay rum.. hell.. that stuff burns even if i havn't shaved.

Yep the clubman is almost pure alcohol so if anything could burn thats it. Of course if you really like burn why not go to the liquor store and get some everclear and just splash that on. We'll hear you screaming.

Unfortunately Everclear is illegal to sell in the State of Washington. This isn't far from what I have been considering. I think I will pick up a nice smelling liquors and see what I like.

i was using a 50/50 mixture of knob creek and witch hazel for a small bit.. still didn't burn as much as the clubman bay rum.. i think it's the cinnamon that does it..

Clubman Bay Rum does indeed sport quite the burn but Osage Rub is the big boy on the block IMHO. The neat thing about Osage Rub is that it will burn like the fires of Hades for about 5 minutes or so then you get the menthol cool.

I agree that Clubman Bay Rum will give you all the burn you could ask for, especially if you don't do your part to keep pressure and blade angle low. Unfortunately, it doesn't burn so much if you do a good job shaving....:rofl2:

+1! The burn comes from alcohol, or menthol. Essential oils on their own do not give any burning sensation. The purer the alcohol, the better the burn.

This is pretty much what I do - I use a 120 proof alcohol that I mix essential oils into and use it for my splash. I usually have around 3% oils so finishes AS would be somewhere around 115 proof.

Anyone tried adding drops of capsaicin to the aftershave for the burn?

My biggest problem is that my shaves are great and consistent. I may have to resort to using improper technique. :D

I hate to say this str8fencer, but I know a surface chemist who would disagree with you, but thank you for reminding me, I just remembered that he offered to make me a splash that he warned would burn like the dickens. I was avoiding it at the time because I just wanted that scent, but now I may have to contact him. Thank you.

I believe so. This way you can get the burn without having to apply any extra products

Wow, I found the burn! I just shaved with mama bears awakenings, which didn't burn most of my face, but I currently am fighting a head cold and my nose and upper lip is chapped to no end. If there is ever a burn it was there.
Could anyone here compare the awakenings to osage rub?

On the burn factor; I am not really into the burn per ce, I use alcohol for a disinfectant. I find it helps avoid rashes and other problems. Chili pepper would definately bring the burn, but I can see no benefits.

I'll tell you a secret. Uncle Jethro likes the burn too and he just applies some battery acid mixed with some rose water on his face. he says it's really bracing to the skin. Har Har.

i found the burn!

enjoying a nice 4am shave this morning and as i rinsed some lather off my blade.. i catch something out the corner of my eye.. the word "antiseptic" on the listerine bottle.. so i figure.. what the heck..

gotta tell yeah.. my face is feeling great.. boy does that stuff tighten things up after a shave.. and talk about a burn..

Ya...not so much for smelling like listerine. I thank you though I might try that just for the heck of it.
I have found a couple of tricks to get the burn: one, I added an extra pass; two, Osage rub; three, custom aftershave splash.

i'm telling ya bud.. it's good stuff.. i have the horrid smelling original listerine.. but i bet the mint would be even better.. give it a shot.

I think the original amber Listerine that comes in the "atomic bomb cylindar" is 22-26% alcohol. I also use the Osage Rub, and I like it a lot. A generous application will even make my eyes tear up a bit from the menthol.

Geez Victor! Maybe you should try some charcoal lighter fluid and a match!

Easiest way to find the burn IMO is to use a razor I have honed and my technique. 100% guarantee to find the burn....Just saying
