I've been searching for about 30 years for that scent all over my Dad after he shaved... I smelled it on men that passed us as we walked through crowded areas. As I grew I smelled it occasionally on men as they passed by.
It's the smell I remember when Dad and I went to the barber shop and I sat in the booster seat to get our haircut.
I finally found it.
Pinaud Clubman Aftershave. The half pint bottle I have says it's the 200th anniversary and my nose has been smelling that stuff for as long as I can remember. Right now it's my favorite. Every time I splash it on I get 30 years younger. For regular days I use Old Spice. lol
I'm sure there's a plethora of great stuff out there, but I hear that some scents get implanted into the brain and for now my brain is really digging the Pinaud Clubman.
Consider olso L' Occitane Levanter Balsam. Matches well your needs.

Gentlemen:
We have a touch of confusion here. Are we focusing on aftershave balm, which as a rule is a creamy substance with some variations, or are we addressing what's considered aftershave splash, such as Pinaud's Clubman? Ordinarily the balm is followed by aftershave splash or cologne.

My English is poor, but the title is clear, I think. http://planetsmilies.net/confused-smiley-17432.gif
This is the first and only one I ever bought, but according to your description, you want something strong. Well, according to the description of where I bought this, which was Straight Razor Designs in fact, it is "very rich". In fact, the exact words were "This product, although rich, leaves your face feeling soft but not greasy..."
It's an understatement. It's very strong. First time, overwhelming. But now, I like it. I don't know how to describe it? can it be smooth and biting? Spicey yet soft? ... It's complex in odor and texture - I mean the texture of the odor, not literally the texture! .... but, it is strong. It doesn't pretend! But that sounds like what you asked. :p
CASTLE FORBES 1445 AFTER SHAVE BALM
I've tried the Truefitt and Hill scented aftershave balms and wasn't a fan. I like the burn of alcohol but this was a different burn, and left it tender to the touch for several hours.
buy a bottle of Cornhuskers lotion and mix in whatever fragrance you like.
I'm surprised that no one has recommended the AS balms from Al's Shaving Products.
The whole range of his fragrance line is also available as an AS balm.
My particular favorites are "Calypso" and "Palermo". Good stuff!
