Gentlemen-
I would like to try Thayers Witch Hazel as part of my routine, but I have a few questions:
First, is there any functional difference between Thayers "Toner" and "Astringent"? If they both contain witch hazel, then are they not both, by definition, astringents?
Second, how would I use it/where does it belong in the routine? For me, it is:
-Preshave oil
-Lather
-Shave
-Alum Block -- rinse face after a few minutes
-Aftershave balm

Not sure about the Toner & Astringent difference but you can substitute the Thayers for the Alum Block. I usually rinse with cold water after my shave then do a quick splash of Thayers and rinse my brush/bowl and dry my razor while my face dries then I use my ASB.
I use it after the alum block. I tap the wet towel over the alum face, I don't rinse it off. I then apply the witch hazel, allow to dry 5 minutes, then aftershave.
I think they are all basically toner and astringent but there are some varieties containing other ingredients which may change the properties of some of them. For instance the superhazel and I think they have some without alcohol.
I usually use it after the alum treatment. I just splash it on with wild abandon.
Hello, Joe: Thayers is a superb product. I treat it both as astringent and toner. I have used it for years. Here is a link to what I believe is the best of the bunch:

x2 but the stuff I have smells reminiscent of a corpse that's been left in the sun a few to many days after being drug out of a swamp for the better part of a week. Not so much with the wild abandon myself, but I dose my face decently with it after my alum blocked face has air dried. And my face feels amazing afterwards, whether by the actual product working or the placebo effect...I don't care. It feels good regardless.Quote:

I use Thayers unscented toner. It has no smell, does not burn, does not dry the face. It seems to have a light astringent (skin-tightening) effect. I use it after shaving, then finish with nivea shaving balm.
I'll be picking up some Thayer's today. Now just to decide on a scent. I'm sure it'd be good to hear a another testimonial to a first time use. I say first time user, i mean of Thayer's. I use witch hazel on the regular, normally just the 2$ bottle from walmart. But i finally found Thayer's locally for a cheap price, so i figured i'd pick some up. I use the Thayer's like bharner and many others said. Shave, quick rinse of cold water, witch hazel, then once dry apply ASB. works great for me.
