My first Friodur, and my first razor with a file-worked spine. Scales are walnut, with hex-screw pins. Love the way this thing shaves.

My entry will be a very old number 12 with beautiful horn scales.
This is how it arrived today. The pins are a bit rough.
Near wedge, broad back, lovely!

Now this is interesting. On page 8 FatBoySlim has a Henckels 80 and I saw that and about flipped. I just bought this razor for a resto project. It's the same blade as the Henckels but as near as we can figure it has Italian markings on it "M. Brumana" over "Gallarate". Gallarate is a city in northern Italy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallarate.M. Brumana and family are from the city of Gallarate. The razor is on it's way to me now. I wonder if Henckels made it or vice versa?????

I think that was general trend in the blades, some kind of "fashion". Take a look :)

How about that. I did a search and found a relative of Martino Brumana so I emailed and asked a little about the family history and if he was in this business of razor manufacturing. I have found he lived around the mid to late 1800's.
This is one of the things that makes this hobby so interesting:-) Thanks for the pics! Oh yes I saw the blade sizes on yours. The one I have on the way is 7/8th inches.
My unspectular twins

5,5/8" Carbon Steel blade, round point, quarter hollow. It took me three hours to hone this razor. I bought it as new and unused, so it was in pretty good condition. According to the vendor, I got it from, it was made in the 1920s.

Nice and heavy razor, but I sold it. Although it got sharp as hell, I could not get used to the stiff blade. Full hollow blades just work better for me.
#2
A simple Friodur, that came in a plastic box. It belonged to a barber from Austria, so it came in good condition.

Although made of stainless steel, this was the easiest to hone razor I have ever had. One of my favourites and up to date, my only stainless blade.
I only have one razor:

http://straightrazorpalace.com/attac...ng-twins-6.jpg Well, guess you'll just have to shave again saturday night... or go to church with a beard :gl:
I shot an email to henckels customer service trying to find all the info i can on my 401 platinum. they requested pix, which i provided and they sent them off to the german henckels customer service to look through the records. ANytime now they might be mailing me back with some info.
May be a good thing to try for others with questions about thier blades from henckels, since the company still exists.
Sorry, I just came across this posting...
The scales are "oosk/Dyed Maple scales made by Bill Ellis". He had a blog on making razor scales a while back, and used that razor for the demo.

I read about guys praising their Henckels and have wanted one for some time now but since they were expensive I figured it would be a long time, if ever, before I would own one. Thanks to a fellow member I was able to buy this J. A. Henckels Twin Works '15' 5/8 square point blade only that was listed here in the classifieds at a very reasonable price, I now own one, Thanks Val! All it needed was scales and honed. I may make some Brazilian Cherry scales for it sometime down the road but am very happy with the white celluloid, in the meantime I can enjoy shaving with it......they are great shavers!
Found this at a local junk\antique store haven't took quite the time to clean it up as you guys have but here it is none the less.1st pic is when I got it ,2nd is after a little clean up.By the way how do you guys clean between the scales and around the pin\hinge area????? without removing the scales.

Here's my new friend, any clue on the history of this guy, how old it could be?
The twins logo on the tang tells you the approximate age. In this case it shows to be a 1900 mark:-)

Super info and pic!
Glad to help :-)
A few of them ... more will come soon
Picked up a Henckels 'platinum' as the bonus razor in a two razor deal. In a fit of boredom this afternoon I decided since the scales where so pretty I'd go ahead and scrape the rust off and see what I had. End result: blade was in serviceable shape. The pitting on the spine is pretty insane (at least 1/32 deep at it's worst) but the sides of the blade cleaned up ok. I figured with that kind of pitting there's no way she'll ever win a beauty contest so I stopped sanding around 800 grit.
Anway, I decided I might as well try honing it up so after maybe 30 minutes on the hones I took it upstairs and stropped the hell out of it and I'll be damned if the thing wasn't passing HHT consistently at level 3-4! I took it for a test shave then and there and holy damn is this thing sharp. The second I came out of the bathroom my wife commented on my unusually close shave. Ugly? Maybe, but I'm keeping it!

That is one of the nicest razors I've ever seen!! Just beautiful. What are the scales made of?
http://straightrazorpalace.com/attac...06608586_o.jpg
Hey lads,
I received it yesterday, cleaned it up (it's in pristine condition, not even any honewear), honed it, and shaved with it this morning.
The first thing that strikes me is how LIGHT this thing is, I have never had a razor this light, it is also extremely hollow, unbelievable almost. The razor itself has no frills or whatever, just a black handle and a polished blade.
Is there any special way to go about honing these guys? I did not have a very smooth shave with this one going ATG. Perhaps because I'm not used to shaving with such hollow razors. I suppose it should shave very very smooth, which is now not the case for me unfortunately.
ANyhow, am I allowed in this exclusive club? :medvl:
Edit: Wow Justacat, VERY nice one!
Of course your in:-) There are several of us who hone razors for members so it can be brought up to snuff very easily. That brand of razor is a joy to hone and takes very little work usually.
The full hollow makes that scraping noise that you don't get with a wedge or quarter hollow. I actually like the sound they make. They all do it so don't let that make you think it's not sharp:-)
Enjoy!
Here's my submission to the clan: J.A. Henckels 72 1/2 Friodur Inox 6/8.

G'day fellas. Here's my latest contribution to the clan. I picked this up a few months ago and have shaved with it a number of times. VERY NICE! But good God that blade is BIG! I can't even see my face when I shave.
It's a 7/8 Friodur INOX. Model 14.
Also thinking about selling it as it's just too damn big for my liking.
Cheers
Scott
